Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Thread

Tekken Producer Katsuhiro Harada made a special announcement at Super Battle Opera tonight. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 as been rumored off and on for a while, but now we know it is real, and we have a trailer to prove it. Here is some general information from SD Tekken:

"As everyone knows… The previously announced Street Fighter X TEKKEN and TEKKEN X Street Fighter titles are part of an overall “Fighting Game Festival.” But, the first title in the “festival” is announced today (at TOUGEKI)… TEKKEN TAG TOURNAMENT 2. Tentatively scheduled for a Summer 2011 arcade release in Japan.

TEKKEN fans are in for a real treat as the order of releases for games will be:

TEKKEN TAG TOURNAMENT 2
Street Fighter X TEKKEN
TEKKEN X Street Fighter
Today’s teaser trailer is in-game footage, not CG. It might look similar to TEKKEN 6, but the graphics engine has been tweaked/improved to support up to 4 characters on screen at once. The character models were redone from TEKKEN 6 moving onward to TTT2.

TTT2 will follow the same control scheme as the original Tekken Tag Tournament: One stick for movement and 5 action buttons. As seen in the teaser, there will be tag combos involving both characters tagging in and out-in succession to complete multi-hit combos/juggles. Walled stages remain and breakable walls/floors are still in the game. New mechanics and stage features will also be implemented. As seen in the trailer, there are some possible unique attacks depending on the character teams that are chosen (Ex. Jin & Asuka).

Several characters are featured in the trailer, but the character lineup will not be announced for some time."

SF/Capcom is the king, but Tekken is a much better fighter than MK. MK looks like it will redeem itself with its upcoming title but its been a joke for quite some time now. Tekken has always had solid releases. Namco has done better with Tekken than Midway has with MK

Imo, Tekken is more fun than Street Fighter. Street Fighter requires too much time and is too "hardcore" for my taste. Tekken is somewhere in between which is perfect for me. Never played MK.

lol...this thread is going to bring out quite a bit of varying opinions. I thought SF was the easiest to get into. Love Tekken, but it is a bit on the technical side and not as user friendly. SF relies heavily on special moves whereas Tekken is more on the combos, which are more difficult to pull off and require better timing.

Well, the combinations on Street Fighter are just very very hard imo. I've never gone past 4 trials on Normal in SF4 with any character Tekken may require you to memorize more, but it's still easier to perform if you ask me.

It looks like Tekken is trying to compete with the two big boys of fighting games: Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. There is a lot of symmetry here for the next gen systems if anyone noticed:

Clearly these three companies: Capcom, Namco, and the WB are doing the whole: "Anything you can do, we can do better!" thing.

While Street Fighter X Tekken and Tekken X Street Fighter is cool; it's just not the same without Mortal Kombat in that mix. A three way dance would be amazing, but at the very least we need Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter! That game is so long overdue. If I were in charge I'd definitely get MK in the mix on the X games. Could you imagine a rated "M" third version by Netherrealm Studios? That'd be sweet!

The fans clearly want it...Make it happen!!!!!

A 3 way game would be an absolute mess. Its going to be a challenge enough trying to find a reasonable compromise between the 2 Capcom and Namco games than to throw MK into the mix. Plus I really dont think there needs to be. I dont think theres much interest or any expectations for that to happen. A SF vs MK seems more likely but even that I wouldnt bet money on haring about anytime soon

I think it's good to see more fighting games coming out, right now there are hordes of shooters out there. As much as I'm hyped for TTT2, I'm really looking for to the SF X Tekken crossover and vice versa

The trickle of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 info may soon turn into a flood. Namco Bandai has revealed that the arcade fighting sequel will be shown in some capacity at next week's AOU Amusement Expo in Japan. It's unclear if this means playable or video-only, but we can at the very least expect an update of some form. IGN will of course be in attendance to deliver a full report.

Famitsu actually got a few new bits of info about the game in its latest issue. The magazine details a "Stage Gimmick" system where you'll be able to send your opponent flying though walls, moving the fight to another area of the battle field. This can apparently lead to tag-based combo opportunities, as when your opponent lands, your partner character will be waiting.

TTT2 will also have an item system, something we've come to expect given past Tekken series developments. You'll be able to dress your character up with items. Some of these can be used for attacks. Famitsu mentions a baseball bat and an item called "hammer head" which looks like a hat with a hammer head sticking out of it.

The game's AOU showing will hopefully be accompanied by new screens and video footage, so Tekken fans will want to check back next week! AOU's press day is on the 18th, Tokyo time.

Though Tekken Tag Tournament 2 has been available in arcades since earlier this year in the States (and back into September in Japan), the revamped PS3 version brings numerous new characters and a new training mode that re-imagines the series’ previously established mini-games.

While the main fighting mechanics of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will feel familiar to anyone acquainted with the series’ staccato combat style, the console version introduces a few new ways to lock horns with worthy competitors. You can now fight opponents in several configurations — two against two, two against one, and one against one — and each of these modes is available at any time. In matches that pit one character against two, the disadvantaged player receives a more generous life bar but obviously cannot switch fighters when the going gets rough. Conversely, the player with two fighters will have to pay close attention; in true Tekken tag form, you’ll lose the round if either character is KO’d.
During the Namco Bandai Gamer’s Day, the developers also clarified their position on offering DLC characters, with series director Katsuhiro Harada making it clear that the game won’t charge players to unlock new characters. This is good news for Tekken fans looking to experience any of the 50+ characters included on the game’s Blu-ray Disc.

Fight Lab is another standout addition to the PS3 version. Its goal is worthy: to train players in Tekken’s deep fighting mechanics without serving up a dry tutorial experience. In a roundtable discussion with Katsuhiro Harada, the veteran developer explained that the mode will embrace some of the quirky (but addictive!) minigames of past Tekken titles while simultaneously training the player so they can come back into the main game with new skills at their disposal.
In Fight Lab, players build up their “Combot,” a customizable cyborg fighter which, as time spent in Fight Lab goes on, can be customized both aesthetically and through specialized combat sets. Players can choose from a variety of moves used by fighters in the main roster as they progress, as well as a number of unlockable costumes and visual flairs to their Combot.

While Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will be instantly familiar to fans of the series, the next entry brings many new innovations to the tried and true formula that fight fans would be remiss to pass by. Keep an eye out for Tekken Tag Tournament 2 this September, and get your best combos ready for massive brawling.
