As much as I dislike Ock becoming the good guy in the end and how much it fits with the theme of the film, Ock had many powerful moments in the film and it shows how Ock is one of Spidey's deadliest enemies.

I wonder why, though, Ock's wife wasn't named Mary, or at least Alice. I never knew Ock had someone that he did love for a time and having his wife's name being a reference to her would've been more the merrier just after learning about that.

I think I may have to go buy this film...as much as I don't want to acknowledge any of the sequels, I just need to watch it only because of Molina's Doctor Octopus.
Thanks guys. Much appreciated

Anno, I'm surprised you don't own Spider-Man 2, considering I often see you defend the franchise against Kaw's attacks. SM-2 is generally considered the best of the franchise. Even if it's not your personal favorite you must admit it's extremely well made.

Finally somebody who can show the bashers the truth and to shut them up. I would have scanned SPider-Man Unlimited #3, as well as a few of the others you mentioned IF I had a scanner. Tom Defalco told the story (Unlimited #3) so damn well. Overall, a great blog and a great way to show people how similar they were.

Btw, I always wanted Mary to return. She would probably hate Ock, but also be sympathetic. I've also always wanted to write my own story about if Mary ever confronted Otto again. add to that how Ock currently has cancer.

I do consider Spider-Man 2 the better film of the trilogy, but I guess in a OCD-esque way, I haven't bought the film to own just because of how Spider-Man 2 feels like it had a cliffhanger sort of ending with Harry and I hate to not have something that feels like a series with that begs to have a beginning, middle and end. I do need to own it, but it's just that nature of myself, lol.

But, yes, I will defend Spider-Man 1 and 2 just because they are great films even with some silly elements that I am not a fan of.

Very good article! It does prove there is a lot of aspects from various writer's incarnations of Doctor Octopus combined into SM2's version Doc Ock.

And that's just with the Doc Ock stuff! There are other comparisons of how Peter dealt with his burden of being Spider-Man in S-M2.

To me, Spider-Man 2 captured a lot of what Spider-Man is, or at least the things that define him as a character and many of his best stories.

S-M2 is still my favorite comic book film of all time.

It's one of my favorite comic book films. Even if it's not quite #1 anymore, I think it is still a very worthwhile watch.
Here's a great video review of Spider-Man 2:

I really think it's a shame that these films get so overlooked these days in favor of Christopher Nolan's Batman films, even though I prefer them.

Back in 2006, the SPider-Man films were literally EVERYWHERE. Hell, the character was everywhere. that's one of the reasons it saddens me so much how people treat them today. I hate being bashed for the trilogy being my favorite.

I agree. Like I said earlier, even though I prefer the Christopher Nolan Batman Trilogy over the Sam Raimi Spider-Man Series, I think the Spider-Man films get a lot more crap than they deserve.

If you ask me, it seems people who say Raimi wasn't true to the comcis are the ones that eventually show that they haven't read a lot of SPider-man comics, and that pisses me off. You don't say what really IS Spider-Man unless you've read the comics first.

I think I said this earlier, but I think that really the complaint is that they didn't like the changes from the comics. For example, they may feel that Spider-Man doesn't wise crack often enough, or Doc Ock is made too much like the Lizard for their tastes. These complaints are valid, even if I don't agree with them.

But at the same time, before S-M3, Raimi's first two films were hailed as the best of the superhero genre by almost everybody.

True. I hope that doesn't happen to the Nolan Batman films.

Nothing is really there that would hinder The Dark Knight Rises from achieving whatever goal Nolan wants it to achieve. Sure, people are already bashing on the look of Catwoman, the look of Bane and even Bane's voice, but all of those complaints reminded me of the Joker backlash as well. It's funny when people just state their ignorant opinions on something without seeing the final product.

Heck, I hope a lot of people are accountable and state that they were wrong when the final product is unleashed.

How many Spider-Man films did Sam Raimi want to make? Wasn't Spider-Man 3 going to be his last prior to its release?

He signed on for 3 films. Then, he signed on for S-M4 in 2008, I believe and there was talk of filming 4 & 5 back to back. Though, Raimi later stated filming 4 and 5 wouldn't happen.

Sony originally planned on 6 movies when they got the film rights, and everyone was initially signed on for 3, which is why SM ended with a vague sense of closure, since it was uncertain as to whether or not the cast would return. But as SMH12 stated, Raimi and co. signed on for a fourth one, with talks of 4 and 5 shooting together to better accommodate Tobey so that his age wouldn't be as much of a factor. But things were being put on hold after word about numerous re-writes to the script, which eventually pushed the film's release date to be pushed back to the point where Sony ended up deciding to reboot it, possibly with a new trilogy which would fill that quota of 6 total Spidey films.

S-MH12....you don't seem to realize that most of the bashing goes to Spider-Man 3, lol. You always bring up the trilogy but that's only the case when someone, for example like KAW, comes to these boards to bash against them. People's real concerns go towards the third installment, a mixture of garbage from both Arad AND Raimi. You can't just say "it's good and only sucks because of Arad" because Raimi did some poor things in the film as well.

Sure, did the two Spider-Man films feel cheesy as well? Yes, but with those films, it balanced out with the drama and the little things I can get past, but when Spider-Man 3 becomes one huge film that is outrageously laughable, then I fully understand why the film gets "bashed". But as a whole? Nope, the first two films should still be praised, but it's clearly NOT a great trilogy by all means, imo.

*sigh* I give up. I find it odd how some people fail to see how much of a negative impact Arad had on S-M3 (even though as a whole, I think the film is awesome). Raimi's idea of having Sandman be Uncle Ben's killer would have ramined, but let's be honest here, the lesson was still the same for Peter. Vulture would have made a different impact and it's obvious the story would have been different.

And even if the majority don't love S-M3, that shouldn't erase what people thought of the first 2. If it did, then that's just bandwagoning.

Nolan actually had only signed for two films and then signed up to do a third. That just speaks "awesome", imo.
Thanks!

Regardless, it was Sam Raimi who agreed to use Venom. If any villain didn't belong, it was Sandman. He just came off as redundant and boring.
