Honestly, I'm not surprised by that reaction from a lot of people. I just have this feeling a lot of the general audience just doesn't give a damn about Superman anymore. Maybe it's because he's a bit old school and you have all these fresh, new visually appealing characters coming out with their own movies.

Not sure, just a hunch I have. We'll find out when the BO numbers come in next year.

It is hard to say. There is nothing the GA can really use a reference to how THIS movie will be since it's a reboot and there is no teaser/trailer.

When you tell people there is a new Batman, they are all excited because of TDK. However, I don't remember there being a big reaction when BB came out and I can't remember what people thought before TDK released it's teaser/trailer.

In my experience, people aren't positive or negative but mostly surprised that there is another one -- almost as if they are surprised they haven't heard about it.

Very true.

Like I said, it's mainly a hunch or feeling that I have. I'm sure the trailer will get people excited, but I wonder how many, not including fans on message boards.

Yeah, that's definitely a factor. Most people don't spend their time talking about the minutiae of a particular film like we do -- they won't care that much either way.

It's the films job to make them give a damn. The GA had the same opinion of Batman post B&R and it took an appealing film to change that.

Agreed. I wouldn't even mind if most people were pessimistic about it since it looks very different than what we're familiar with.

However, the movie can easily win over the masses. Even to this date, we still haven't really gotten a truly super powered hero in full display on the big screen. Green Lantern sucked, but at least he showed off his powers much more than Thor.

Seeing The Avengers fight together will be awesome, but I think seeing Superman as a one man army will wow more people.

Meh indeed.

Superman is irrelevant. It's on this film to make Superman relevant.

It's probably the environment I live in. If I get excited about something (whether it be a film, a comic book, etc) people I know would shrug and not care so much. Then again, I'm interested in all things people around me don't really care about. So, for me it's best not to say anything.

The thing with the general audience and films is, if you tell them next year a Superman film will be released, they probably don't care. When they see a trailer on TV or on the internet, they may think; 'Hmm, could be interesting' (or not), and then they go see it and form their final opinion about it after they've seen it. It's all about the marketing strategy that's being used. If that's well done, then the film will do better than when it's done wrong.

For example: John Carter was in general a good and entertaining film (if you ask me, and people I've spoken to, who are not Taylor Kitsch or John Carter fans). The problem why the film didn't do as well as expected is, because Disney came up with a seriously lacking marketing strategy. I don't watch a lot of TV, so a lot of the film trailers don't get to me unless I stumble upon them on the internet. But the 'big bucks' films do reach me. I saw the John Carter trailer ONCE on TV, and that was on the day the film was released. Now if Disney had gotten their marketing strategy right, I would've seen it at least a few times more (on TV, not online). I would've gone anyways, regardless of the amount of advertising, but that's not the case with the general audience. They need to get excited by the amount of advertising, the trailers, and so on. And that's where Disney failed.

So what I think is; if Man Of Steel is properly promoted, people will become excited. If not, people will still say 'meh', no matter how good (or bad) the visual effects, the story, the ass-kicking is...

I think normal movie goers don't care about movies until the week before, maybe two or three, if the advertising is good. The advertising for this film will have to get people excited, that means money shots in the trailer.

Yep. The first real reaction from the GA will come when they see footage from either the teaser or the trailer.

I get a 'looks cool' or a 'meh' from most people... but I get that when I talk about Avengers, Amazing Spiderman and TDKR too, so I don't think it's a good gauge of whether people will see and like the films.

They don't care. They don't really care about any films more than a few weeks away.

A few of my other film fan friends seemed intrigued. But that's it.

Reactions among most of the general public are the same as they were for Batman Begins. I imagine it'll do comparably. It'll do well critically, and pull in some decent numbers but nothing amazing. It'll make a killing in DVD rentals and sales due to word of mouth. The sequel will do better. Not TDK better, but much better, nonetheless.

does WB have BB expectations? do they realize this film will take an initila hit due to SR ala BB with B&R?

The only big difference is, unlike Batman Begins.. it's a safe bet MoS will cost above 200 Million in post. Just like Superman Returns.

It will be more challenging for MoS to profit than BB. Especially since it's coming out in June when summer blockbusters tend to underperform.
