Awesome A lot more comedy than I was expecting!

Was anyone else surprised, and delighted, by the amount of comedy in this movie? And I'm not JUST talking about the Hulk. I think we all expected that going in, but other characters and situations had some real good laugh out loud moments. The Iron Man vs Thor fight, for example, had a lot good ones.

Not really: its Joss Whedon. He is a master of mixing comedy and drama, sometimes in the same scene.

I'm not too familiar with Whedon's work, I'm afraid.

That's why I loved his TV-series Buffy or angel so much. Even when the setting is dark or dramatic it never lost the humor. There were often ridiculous jokes you didn't expect, but never felt out of place. And it's great he went on for TA on this way.

The humor seemed more out-there in this movie. Hulk smashing Loki, for example, is the type of comedy you're not gonna see in 99% of superhero movies.

Yeah, it was a step up to the comedy found in other Marvel movies or other superhero movies. What I find odd is that thinking back on how much there was, I didn't find it detracting from the film or the characters. They had drama and different tones in the scenes that needed it. I think the humor is a good part of what makes this Avengers film work.

I found the humor in Raimi's Spidey films to be very awkward and unfunny. It's the kind of humor Steve Urkel would laugh at. It's a whole different breed of humor that for me didn't mix well.

I agree. Totally. Gave me a difficult time getting through that trilogy.

Yeah, the comedic elements in this movie pretty much blow all the other superhero hero films out of the water in terms of humor, save for Iron Man.
Seriously, I've never been in a superhero movie where people were laughing that hard at all the right moments. Not one joke felt forced, not one part fell flat... it was done perfectly.

The humor was great in this film. The audience was cracking up everytime they were supposed to. Nothing fell flat. Makes for an incredibly enjoyable movie!

I felt it was a little too much at times. But this is a movie with both Tony Stark (smart ass) and Thor (the hammiest superhero), so you knew there was going to be a decent amount of humor.

They also had a lot of fun with Captain America being... out of time.

And it is written by Joss Whedon.

Though really the best stuff was with the Hulk. I don't think I've ever heard as many laughs in a cinema as when Hulk and Loki "fought".

Humor is subjective. It will never please everyone. What I like about the humor in this film is that you know alot of other directors would have shied away from it (because of the subjectivity). It's alot easier to be cynical/humorless or dry as a bone. It's actually a much bigger risk to mix humor and drama so effectively. It takes alot more skill and finesse.

Every bit of humor had my theater in a serious uproar. My favorite bit was Steve Rogers giving Nick Fury 10 bucks after the Hellicarrier took off.

That was ****ing hilarious.

I wasn't at all surprised by the amount of humor as I loved the first few seasons of Buffy and am familiar with Whedon's work. However, the fact that every bit of it worked perfectly did surprise me.

Other superhero films have struggled to get their comedic touches just right; miscues can do a lot of damage to the film's narrative flow. Some writers are simply better off leaving humor aside because they don't have the gift for it. Others overemphasize characters they think are funny, but they either aren't or become grating after a while (Darcy in Thor fell into that category for me). Then there are times when the wrong tone is struck and the humor falls flat (FF movies, anyone?)

Any qualms I had were put to rest by Whedon's script. All of the humor worked flawlessly because all of it was organic. It arose from the characters, so it fit perfectly. Other writers could take lessons from The Avengers' script: Don't force humor, don't sacrifice characters' integrity for cheap laughs and use the type of humor that fits the story.

I liked the comedy. Unlike Thor, I think the Avengers used humour to show their personalities a lot more rather than getting towards "oops, things are too dark, time for a lol" territory.

I did think it got too much at times. It got to the point that I couldn't take Loki seriously (then again, were we supposed to?).

But there was a ton of good jokes and exchanges.

The fact that it was such a deadpan moment and was played really straight made it that much more hilarious.

Hulk punching Thor was very funny. I also loved it when Loki belittles Hulk, who replies by throwing him around like a rag doll and saying, "Puny god". Loki's surprised and confounded expression afterwards the end is priceless.

And the end credits scene with all of the members sitting in the shwarma joint eating together was just pure gold.

Seriously, there are so many hilarious moments in this film that I'd be hard pressed to list all of them. And the way they were balanced with drama and action really impressed me.

This type of humor is found in the comics and so it fits and it actually came off natural and"funny"than expected on film than just goofy!
