back in 1989 when that movie first came out he nailed it. The joker we know now has changed so it is an unfair comparison

The Joker we know hasnt changed that much since 1989.

Nicholson played the perfect Joker for Burtons take on Batman.

He's a great actor but then again I never liked the Batman version by Tim Burton eversince so Ive always find Jack's Joker so over the top, he was mugging the camera to the point he really annoyed me.
But it will still be tough to beat him because he's got unforgettable Joker presence about him. You cant think of Nicholson without attaching the Joker to his face.

I could agree with my fellow Floridian here. When you think about all the interpretations of the Joker, it's definitely a large gray area. Nicholson was decent for the time period and tone of the movie, but it's just 1 interpretation of the character. Ledger's will be a different interpretation. I'm hoping for a Joker similar to TAS.

"Nicholson was over the top"... Are you aware that Joker is a over the top character, don't you?

The Toronto Star also got a quote from Ledger about the role:

I wouldn't have thought of me, either. But it's obviously not going to be what Jack Nicholson did. It's going to be more nuanced and dark and more along the lines of a Clockwork Orange kind of feel. Which is, I think, what the comic book was after: less about his laugh and more about his eyes.
YES!!!

you are aware joker in BTAS was exactly and i do mean exactly the same as he was in Tim Burton film. also accroding ot ledger and Nolan, joker in the sequel will be more quiet and less Jokerish, more serial killer physcho according to them.

Nicholson was just being Nicholson. I didn't hink he nailed it at all. I think Hammil is the one who nailed the Joker in Batman Mask of the Phantasm.

Yes but only as The Joker's voice.

Hamill does not even count due, he just did/does a extremley excellent Joker voice.Thats like saying Kevin Conroy nailed Batman in BTAS [he just nailed the voice].

I think Nicholson nailed it. And Ledger may nail his version as well.

Nicholson nailed it in 1989. He was great, maybe not physically, he was fat, but as a lunatic psycho.. he was great, remember all the great moments in Batman. Wow Jack Nicholson was superb....Batman by Burton was more like Batman: The Joker

yeah man, ledger's gonna kick ass as The Joker. The fact that he's never done anything like this & that he blew the director & writers away with his performance only proves it more.

Pretty much. With The Joker, there is no top. Critics always point out that Jack is prone to go over the top with some of his roles, but that doesnt apply with a character like The Joker.

Oh, and I thought Nicholson was amazing in Burton's Batman.

Jack nailed the Joker OF THAT TIME.

Nolan will give us the Joker of nowadays.

Much has changed, concerning the Joker since '89.

Which is funny since the Joker of TDK sounds to be similar to the classic Joker

Nicholson gave a good performance but I don't think his character had depth I was think good 'Nicholson performance' rather than 'THAT's joker' you know the scene where batman/bale interrogates the dirty cop THAT was batman to a tee, bale NAILED it right there and then.

so basically Nicholson gets a 'A' for effort but doesn't quite 'get' the joker. here's hoping nolan reads the killing joke and watches the return of the joker the quintessential joke stories and ledger gives the performance of his career.

anyone else agree?
I disagree. You are the only one. I think.
