There's no such thing as a "surprise hit" in my opinion because certain songs are set up to be hits. "Hits", while certainly being good songs much of the time, are completely manufactured. I've found many times that I'll like other songs on an album better than the "hits." "Hits" are usually pretty conventional and full of hooks. They have to be. The masses as a whole won't go for something daring. If you just stick with "hits" you may be missing out on something great.
ahhh, but by buying a hits album I can often decide if I like the artist enough to buy their other albums. For example: The first Chris de Burgh album I bought was "Best Moves" and after that I bought the others because I liked his "Best Moves" album. However, even though I have purchased many of his other albums most of the songs of his that are my favourites are from the "Best Moves" album.
