Dreamworks Plans "Fright Night" Remake

DreamWorks is developing a remake of the 1985 vampire horror comedy cult classic "Fright Night" says The Hollywood Reporter.

Tom Holland's original follows a teenager (William Ragsdale) who discovers that his neighbor (Chris Sarandon) is a vampire. He seeks the help of a rundown elderly B-movie marathon host (Roddy McDowell) to help him stop the monster.

No writer has been hired, but the updated version will keep the comedy-horror tone while modernizing the effects.

Michael De Luca, Michael Gaeta and Alison Rosenzweig will produce.

All too often it seems our headlines have been littered with nothing but news about remakes. Let's switch that up with this: The proposed Fright Night update is dead. A pile of ash. Just like Jerry Dandrige, the bloodsucker who met a fiery fate thanks to two brave vampire hunters.

A bit of back story: In 2007, Sony's Screen Gems was fielding pitches for a proposed remake of Fright Night. Except what the producers wanted sounded something more akin to The Funhouse than the "boy who cried wolf" tale of a young man and his discovery of a vampire who has moved in next door. (More details here.) Later, in March of '08, the original's director, Tom Holland, went in to chat about the remake, a sequel and other matters.

Insiders tell us, since then, the Fright Night remake has been abandoned (for now) after a few cracks at the script yielded unsuccessful results.

Meanwhile, we've been hearing the Hell Night redo at Screen Gems still has a pulse which is beating stronger. Producers are currently looking for writers with a new take on Tom DeSimone '81 film about college pledges getting picked off at an old mansion. The Exorcist's Linda Blair starred in the original.

All It did was really switch companys. But atleast with Dreamworks it'll be R compared to Sony Screen Gems making it, which would have been PG-13.

This could be good if its done the right way.

We had recently heard that Sony Screen Gems has been dropping projects left and right as they couldn't turn them into PG-13 pics. One such project was the long-gestured remake of Fright Night, which is now heading on over to DreamWorks (can I get a hallelujah?). No details were revealed about the direction they plan on taking the reboot, but we can only hope it keeps at least some of the heart the original carried (but that's highly unlikely). Vampires continue their bloody winning streak as DreamWorks is in the process of picking up a remake of "Fright Night."

Michael Gaeta and Alison Rosenzweig of Gaeta/Rosenzweig Films are producing along with Michael De Luca. Rosenzweig, who also is setting up remakes of "The Reincarnation of Peter Proud" and "Angel Heart" with De Luca, brought the project to him.

DreamWorks co-president of production Mark Sourian is overseeing for the studio, which has rarely foraged in the horror genre for material. Its most recent two outings -- "The Uninvited" and "The Ruins" -- grossed just $29 million and $17 million, respectively. But its remake of "The Ring" and its sequel grossed $390 million worldwide.

The original "Fright Night," written and directed by Tom Holland in 1985, was a horror comedy about a teenager who discovers that his neighbors are vampires. No writer has been hired, but the updated version will keep the comedy-horror tone while modernizing the effects.

The CAA-repped De Luca also is producing "Moneyball," starring Brad Pitt, at Columbia, and has the drama "Brothers," directed by Jim Sheridan, coming out this year.

Rosenzweig recently did business with DreamWorks and Sourian on "Nonstop," a sci-fi action thriller from screenwriter Michael Gilvary that Patrick Tatopoulos is directing and Len Wiseman is producing for the studio.

I don't know if I'd call Fright Night a "classic". It's a fun, 80's movie but it certainly isn't something untouchable. That said, they should focus on telling original vampire stories... like Twilight

Okay I know most of you are against this remake. But who would you like to see in this movie?

Here are a couple of my choices.

Charley - A virutal unknown or something not that famous really.
Jerry - I was thinking about maybe Julian McMahon. Because he's a good looking guy as Chris Sarandon was.
Peter Vincent - I was thinking of maybe someone like maybe Robert Englund. It be a good chance to break the freddy mold he has.

As far as Amy and Evil Ed - I'd say the samething I said about charley.

Just use big or well known names for The Jerry and Peter Vincent roles. And round out the cast with lesser known to little known names.

The only way I'd be for the remake is if they cast Christopher Lee as Peter Vincent. (Or perhaps Bruce Campbell.)

This just screams bad idea to me. Particularly since the local tv horror host has died out. That's the only thing that set it apart from a generic vampire story in the first place.

unless this movie takes plce in the 80's, i don't know if there would be a peter vincent exactly like the one in the original. a kid charlie's age now would probably be watching a show hosted by a Bruce Campbell type of actor...even though he hasn't really done vampire films. ****, you can't really update this movie, it would have to take place in the 80's or the pop cultural chronology just doesn't pan out.

right. here's my thought, for a film that takes place in the 80's, it totally makes sense for a kid like charlie to be into christopher lee-style vampire flicks from the 60's that would be on a late night tv hosted by a washed up 60's and 70's Hammer-type actor like peter vincent, because those are the things a horror geek in the 80's would get off on. but in present day, a 16-year old kid wouldn't be watching those on tv, he'd be watching movies from the 70's and 80's with a host (even the host thing is stretching it) like bruce campbell or someone like that. it's a matter of what outdated films would be the focus of a young horror film geek

Maybe an old horror actor becomes host of a reality tv show that centers around hunting ghosts, werewolves, vampires & other supposed monsters & then one day they get a call from Charlie Brewster about his neighbour being a vampire & when they go to investigate a Fright Night ensues.

this is actally a fairly interesting idea for this.
charlie loves to watch a reality tv show called Fright Night hosted by a Bruce Campbell-type actor. then it could basically unfold alot like the first one.

The horror genre goes in cycles. The same can be said for 3-D. And right now the two are skipping merrily through Hollywood hand-in-hand. Name a horror picture in development, it's likely in consideration to be in 3-D. One on the top of one 3-D company's list is Fright Night.

An inside tipster dropped ShockTillYouDrop.com a line this morning informing us the Dreamworks remake, announced last month, is in line to hit us in 3-D. Mind you, lists are a dime a dozen in Hollywood, as are those who take meetings about potential films, so this isn't enormous news. Fright Night, we thought you should know, is presently on the list of one company currently working on a major upcoming 3-D horror picture.

Gaeta/Rosenzweig Films and producer Michael De Luca are nurturing the Fright Night remake rights and are currently looking for a writer and director.

Writer Tapped For Fright Night Remake

Marti Noxon, a writer/producer on AMC's Mad Men has been hired to write a remake of Tom Holland's beloved classic Fright Night for DreamWorks Studios. The screenwriter has a bit of history with vampires having worked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. (She took over for Joss Whedon as Buffy's showrunner from the sixth season on)

Producers Michael De Luca, Michael Gaeta and Alison Rosenzweig set up the Fright Night project in May. DreamWorks executive Mark Sourian is overseeing for the studio, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The original 1985 film, written and directed by Tom Holland starred Chris Sarandon, Roddy McDowall and William Ragsdale as Charlie Brewster, a curious teen that discovers his next door neighbor is a vampire.

For years, there have been numerous attempts to revive a Fright Night remake with all indications pointing towards a name only remake that would take place at an amusement park. (Funhouse anyone?) Thankfully, it seems their sticking to the original films' story. The article says, "The new version will keep the comedy-horror tone while modernizing the effects."

Considering vampires are "hot" at the moment, the revival of this Fright Night remake isn't surprising. Let's hope for the best!

Eh, might as well. Since re-making everything has been in full effect for awhile now, going with the current craze of 3-D as well for this unnecessary re-do isn't the least bit surprising.

Yeah, that actually is a fairly intersting idea. Come in with all their equipment and start to get "anomalous" readings. First idea that actually makes me think there's potential. Also having the team get picked off could be fun.

I think you also could do something with Vampire looking like he just stepped out of Twilight and perhaps watch him turn uglier into a Count Orlock type as he's denied victims and he takes some hits.

Heck, why not hire Chris Sarandon to play Peter Vincent?
