This is a bit disappointing, but honestly I shouldn't be surprised. The man has been working very hard for the last several years on the same thing, and clearly the man needs a change of backdrop in his life. I just hope that whoever replaces him tries hard to maintain a sense of continuity so we can still have an effective trilogy.

Ever consider that maybe they don't use the G1 designs because they DON'T work? Seriously, if I saw a "realistic" version of G1 Optimus Prime I would LMAO, and I'm sure most of the audience would too. They are just so simple and boxy that the audience would look at them like a cheap downgrade, so I see no reason to use them in the movies other than to please the G1 fanboys. This isn't G1, so I don't see why they should have to use G1's designs.

Star Wars could've been created to sell toys. Does that negate the Star Wars mythology and characters? Pirates of the Caribbean is based on a theme park ride. Does that mean fans can't discuss the characters???

I call bs. Bay will probably be coming back. With all those monster paychecks, what does he have to complain about?

This is probably Bay giving false information again, I don't think he wants a "Brett Ratner" type coming in and f***ing up his franchise.

Do you know Michael Bay? Have you ever seen him in interviews? He could give 2 craps about what happens to Transformers after him. He's his own person that does what he thinks is cool. He could care less about what happens after him. He'd probably even laugh if someone did come in after him and screwed everything up. The only franchise he cares about personally is Bad Boys and that's because it was his first big break so he's sentimental about it.

They are supposed to look humanoid? Since when? So i suppose you like that all the G1 characters are basically 95% the same in terms of design? You dont like the variety of forms that the bayformers have?

And bumblebee having a blaster for a hand is not a mind blowing addition. It's rather basic.
Megatron did something similar. I didnt say its the best thing in the world. Just that i liked it.

Bumblebee is still a runt but having him as a nerdy friend of Sam made the character more relatable. It was as if the only Autobot who could truly relate to Sam was a pacifist and a geek. Jetfire looks silly with his wulrus stache and cane. Nothing Bay did made him anymore majestic ("My bad"?). And Megatron looks like a run-of-the-mill monster. Gone was the humanoid for that made him look like he had a nazi helmet on wih his sadistic grin. His giant arm bazooka was iconic and a powerful image of a warlord. Now he looks like a monster you'd find in a sci-fi channel original. Gone is any parallel you'd find to an evil dictator of human history which made the character far more symbolic.
Bay's Bumblebee might be a puppy near Sam, but he is ****ing hardcore when it comes to combat. As for the rest of your post.... eh.... Enjoy your cubes and huge robots turning into small guns!

This conversation about the fangs is ridiculous.
Why doesnt anyone talk about the noses? Both in G1 (suck it Geewuners) and in the movies. Do they smell?
Why do they have mouths in G1? Shouldnt they have some sort of speaker?

So you see its ridiculous. Prime looks the way he looks because he is the good guy. Megatron looks like a nazi in G1 and like a monster in the movies because he is the villain. Its as simple as that.

Aliens would look nothing like humans in the real world. They look the way the look because they are based on our fiction. At least the bayformers have some variety. I remember a picture that showed HotRod next to a couple of autobots and the only difference in their heads was the fin on their helmet and the colour.

At least, as robots from another planet that can transform into anything, Bay has given them a variety of forms, number of fingers, wheels instead of legs, etc. He evolved the designs and didnt copy those 20 year old designs.

Every superhero has had changes to his suit and gear over the years, why cant Transformers evolve to suit our time?

Enjoy your cubes and nearly identical robots.

I remember that WETA was doing some early concept work for a Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I know this suggestion might seem somewhat farfetched but having Peter Jackson's interpretation of "Transformers" would be a sight to see. Not sure if he would sign on that easily but Jackson is notorious for playing with sfx (something he would have fun doing with "Transformers" working with ILM and maybe even bringing WETA on board) and he is working with Spielberg on "The Adventures of Tin Tin" so there's a connection right there.

Spielberg as a producer doesn't have to look far if he needs to get a new director for the third film.

The G1 designs are too blocky and simple to look compelling in a real world setting. The only way they would work is if the entire movie was an animated CG film, because that's the one setting where such cartoony looking designs would be acceptable. I am an animator and I can assure you that in addition to the fact that the G1 designs would look stupid in real life, they simply would not be any fun to animate as CG. The G1 designs are what you would use in a direct-to-video movie or a Sci-Fi Saturday Original, because they are simple and easy to animate. For a multi-million dollar blockbuster though, a more baroque design is preferable.

The Bayformers do look different from the G1s, I won't argue against that. However, the important thing is that they are trying to maintain a sense of the characters' silhouettes. If you compare G1 Starscream to Bayformers Star Scream, yes they do have some rather remarkable differences, but if you were to just examine their silhouette, you can see a lot of similarities. The same can be said of many of the characters, and in character design half of the work is making a recognizable silhouette. I think the Bayformers overall do a good job of updating and adjusting how the characters look for a 21st century motion picture.

Weta's Evangelion project looked kickass. I really hope they can get a studio to pick it up someday, because NGE is my favorite anime series and one of my favorite TV shows period. It's pretty much tied with Superman in the "movie projects I want to escape from development hell" category.

Anyway, I'm not sure if Peter Jackson would do Transformers 3. The guy is pretty busy, and I honestly don't see him picking up where another director left off. And given that there's like a lot of creative differences between Jackson and Bay, I wouldn't count on a very strong sense of continuity since he'll probably want to change things to his own tastes.

Personally, Louis Leterrier would be my first choice. He's just as capable of balls-to-the-wall action scenes as Michael Bay (including chaotic car chases, as seen in The Transporter), and in The Incredible Hulk showed that he can put together a cool monster fight scene. If the goal is to maintain continuity with the first two movies will injecting a bit of new flavor, I think Leterrier would be the most logical choice.
