Well, sort of. This is about a week old but I found it fascinating. While talking to slashfilm.com Michael Dougherty revealed ideas he pitched to Singer for X-men 3 and outlined what the story was to be. It sounded epic and Dougherty comes across as though he would have much rather done X3 over Superman Returns but it was Singer's call. I've never really felt this before but now I think Singer did screw over X-men fans and Superman fans. Dougherty's X-men 3 sounded like it could have been the best film in the series and its implied that none of them had much desire to do a Superman sequel.

Singer didn't screw over X-Fans. Apparently, he was planning on making X3 after SR, but Fox didn't want that. So they had a falling out (that being one of many reasons) and he left. All Fox had to do was wait and we would've had a much better film.

Singer and Dougherty made it clear the decision was Superman Returns or X-men 3. They knew the release date on X3 was set for 2006.

WWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This would've been the movie rival all movies...things I liked were: Alkali Lake, opening, all dryed up strange occurances happening around the world(Think Silver Surfer in F4 sequel) Phoenix decimating mutant camps cargo ships w/mutant slaves(possibly Genosha(??)) a strange light in the sky i.e. Phoenix Phoenix tearing the ships apart Phoenix feeling that she's above the "Drama" and decides to take matters into her own hands, being a 1 woman crusade, and she didn't give a damn what the X-Men thought... Cyclops actually builds the Danger Room feeling that its his/X-Men fault that if they were faster, and better fighters Jean wouldn't have died X-Men and Brotherhood are after Phoenix Jean realizes her new found ablities are causing havoc Cyclops doesn't kill Phoenix, but she decides to leave Earth and become a God and start life anew in the cosmo's and her saying, "I"ll be watching" man even though this was just ideas, I'm really geeked once again for Singer's treatment!!! its funny becuase I have read some fanfics w/the intended Alkali lake sequence and the strange events happening... |

I don't quite love the part about Phoenix going to the cosmos but I love everything else.
Oh for what could have been. It still breaks my heart.

But istn't that what the Phoenix does. She just flys off like that. I think I remember her doing that in the show.

That's what Phoenix does in The Animated Series' interpretation of The Dark Phoenix Saga, but that's not what actually happens in The Dark Phoenix Saga. Originally, Jean Grey kills herself--Jean Grey cannot control herself and, rather than become a god and destroy everything she loves, she kills herself as her last heroic act.

Singer's X-Men 3 would have been 10x better than the X-Men 3 that we got.
![]() ![]() Michael Dougherty had some great ideas for X-Men 3, I think he should write screenplays for more comic book films. |

I thought Dougherty had some excellent ideas, especially the way Cyclops started the Danger Room. I'd love to hear what he envisaged for other characters, and how he would have used Wolverine.
I'm not in meltdown over the X3 we did get but I do like his alternative vision very much indeed. If anyone's interested, or doesn't want to keep scrolling back and forth on the audio link, I put my 140 words per minute shorthand to good use and transcribed relevant sections for my blog here: http://blogs.coventrytelegraph.net/t...gherty-de.html

i kind of envisioned that's how Cyclops would have become, he'll be a more agrresive leader, really coming down hard on the X-Men, while Logan would be the one to tell him about himself...
hmm I wonder if Prof. X knew that Jean has arisen, and was waiting for to reveal herself or she kept her presence from him and how Cyclops react to him knowing?...also how would Emma Frost, Trask/Sentinels be a factor?? man this new info raisies so many ?s would Kitty/Colossus /Beast been part of the team or would Nightcrawler stayed? I sense a lot fanfics on the way... |

Those ideas are really interesting to think about. It would have been absolutely fantastic too see them on screen, instead of my imagination. This plot direction, combined with the cast of these movies would have been the ultimate X-movie. It's a great combination and balancing act between the crazy elements of the comics, and the tone of the movies.
I would like to hear more of his ideas on the brotherhood, and sub-plots for other X-men (although I love that he didn't mention Wolverine at all).

I actually prefer the Phoenix ending we got, with her trying to kill Wolverine while he wouldn't give up and had to kill his beloved to save everyone else.
I think it's one of the few things they got right.

From the sound of that ending, I think Dougherty was probably going to also write X-Men 4.

Yeah, I had heard about that before The Last Stand was even made but I forgot about it.
Thanks for reminding me.

Ok I'm by no means an X3 hater.....but my God, those plans could have resulted in an absolute masterpiece.

Dougherty's pitch for X3 certainly would have flowed better coming off of X2 than what we ultimately got I think.

i agree, because my mind went to the scene where the X-Men confront Pres. McKenna and how they sort of came to a "Peace treaty", so I could Magneto & Brotherhood laying low until Phoenix enters the picture and kicks up all the mess...

Said this on another thread, just reading that was a 1000 times better than the X3 we got, that would have been the greatest comic book movie ever, no doubt, just makes what we got all the more dissapointing.

I never joined the X3 hatred bandwagon, I agree with Dougherty some things were pretty well done in the movie, but indeed this version makes the saga far more epic, and DP a much more powerful, interesting and menacing character, and Cyclops a much more assertive character.
Marvel, listen to Dougherty. Take this version and make a comic book alternative version. I canŽt imagine an X-Men fan who wouldnŽt have liked to see this take.

Still, far more interesting than the overall storyline from the movie. And she could have died on X4, or they could have changed that ending.
On Singer leaving... If Fox had greenlit X3 right after the success of the second - which is what any studio with half a brain would have done - heŽd have stayed with the franchise. Fox did nothing but make things hard throughout both X-Men movies, and paid the price for it.
