Hi all, time for a serious discussion.
So we all know how bad it is to advertise smoking to movie going audiences. It's dangerous for people's health and encourages addiction. That said, I've always thought the "Captain America" film should be a period piece that shows how things have changed. When I saw "Mad Men" I thought, thats what I want for a "Captain America" film. I also think it adds to the authenticity of the era such as in films like "Munich" and "Saving Private Ryan." ![]() Although I don't think either Captain America or Bucky should be seen smoking Last edited by Silvermoth; 11-10-2009 at 03:20 AM. |

of course they should. I don't understand why hollywood stopped on-screen smoking in the first place.
it's like because of potential car accidents in the real world, people in the movie suddenly stop using cars.

Yeah it's ridiculous. Hasn't Wolverine given up smoking a cigar in the comics because a relative of the Marvel editor died of lung cancer? I remember reading something about that.

I voted "No".
Despite the widespread use of cigarettes in the 30's & 40's and the general ignorance of the harm they cause, I don't think they really need to show it to convey the time-frame. I'm actually a smoker (albeit reluctantly at the present) and I don't necessarily agree with Hollywood's ban on cigs on film either, but if it isn't important to the plot, then why have it in the movie? Besides, if I try to quit, that's THE LAST thing I want to see in a smoke-free theater...someone puffing away onscreen while I'm jonesin' for a drag! Lol!

I think it should be in the movie to contrast how things have changed. Of course Cap shouldn't smoke and can actually mention how bad they are for you to a fellow soldier or Bucky... but the movie should show how times have changed... it will make the man out of time element of the Avengers that much better

Well using Rage's idea as a jumping off point, Bucky could light up on the battlefield & Cap could say "Those'll kill ya" & he replies "I think they might have to get in line behind the Nazis!". Then when Cap's unfrozen (if they go a similar route as The Ultimates) Bucky could tell him as an old man that he has asthma & emphysema and "How does it feel to always be right?"

Maybe. It honestly doesn't add or take away anything important to the movie.
With the whole MPAA not likeing smoking, and Joe Q banning smoking from MARVEL comics it won't happen anyway.

Exactly. I just don't see Cap smoking anyway. The guy should be as clean as possible.

Yes there should be characters who smoke. If you want it to be authentic, then you gotta ignore the politically correct ********.

What's ridiculous?
Ridiculous is not showing a very common thing on the front lines in those days because it will offend the mommys and daddys. |

Sure. Because that's the way things were then. But I still say he shouldn't use a gun (and while I'm at it...I love the boots with cuffs....or the dreaded 'pirate boots' everyone keeps referencing) because that's the way he was.

yea i really see no issue with other soliders or background characters smoking. Since it was the thing back in the 30s and 40s.

To not have characters smoke in this movie that takes place during a time period when damn near everyone smoked would be like saying it didn't happen at all.

Smoking lends so much to the film noir styles of the period; it’s the cause for the literally smoky atmosphere. Losing it would really hurt the artistry in my opinion.

Yeah, sure. Throw some cigarettes in there for stylistic purposes.
