Default Sequel Idea Re: How Lois Finds Out

Sorry fellas, my interest is more in the love story between Lois & Superman which I thought was beautifully done in SR. I think they should do a new, clever twist on how Lois finds out Clark=Superman for the sequel. Lois drawing glasses on a picture of Superman like he’s Mr. Potato Head is so lame. I'd love to see a twist where Lois figures it out but doesn't confront Clark/Superman right away until he's really trapped into telling the truth. Here's how I envision the final revelation playing out in Superman Returns 2 into SR3. (I know it's a bit long, but there's a surprise twist at the end... Let me know what you think.)

Lois’s wedding is looming close. Richard has put his foot down. He wants to get married. He’s feeling very threatened by Superman now that he's reemerged in Lois’s life. Perry White is throwing a party for Richard and Lois a few days before their wedding. Folks from the Daily Planet, including Clark, are invited. There’s a small band playing. Clark watches Richard take Lois’s hand and lead her to the dance floor. Jason comes running up to them. Richard lifts the small boy and continues to dance with Lois and Jason. Clark grows increasingly tense as he watches Lois, Richard and Jason dancing– the picture of the perfect family. Clark is clearly dying with jealousy. Jimmy Olson is yammering something to Clark but Clark isn’t listening. Eventually Richard and Lois circulate their way over to where Clark and Jimmy are. Handshakes and congratulations abound. Clark’s “congratulations” is decidedly less enthusiastic than Jimmy’s but no one notices. Jimmy earnestly asks Lois to dance. Clark shoots him a look that no one else sees – it’s a mixture of displeasure and regret that he didn’t have the courage to ask himself. Clark wistfully watches Lois walk onto the dance floor with Jimmy. He then turns and stares at Jason whom Richard is holding in a fatherly way. Jason asks for juice. Clark watches Richard walk away with his son.
Clark is all alone and feeling really depressed now. All of a sudden Perry White cuts into Jimmy and Lois’s dance and tells Jimmy to take a photo of someone important who has just arrived. Jimmy protests that he’s mid-dance with Lois. Perry, exasperated, yells over to Clark, “Clark, dance with her!” Clark quickly looks around him in surprise. Lois laughs, none too kindly, and says, “Oh Clark doesn’t dance.” At that moment, Clark decides he’s had enough and says rather defensively, “Sure I do Lois.” Then catching himself, Clark then stammers out, “I mean.,.uhh…If you don’t mind.” Lois gives him a condescending little smile and takes Clark’s hand. Just as they reach the dance floor, the band plays a slow, romantic song. Lois looks at Clark amused, half-expecting him to balk or get flustered. Instead, Clark stands up straighter, firmly takes her hand in his, slides his arm around her waist, and pulls her in. Clark then proceeds to confidently move her around the dance floor – fluidly, gracefully. Lois barely conceals her surprise as she allows Clark to lead. She has to ask, “Clark! Where did you…? I never figured you to be a dancer.”
He stares down at her through his glasses. “Now why is that Lois?”
Lois is taken aback by the direct way he’s looking at her. She replies nervously, “Well, you’re so… I mean at work, you seem…”
Clark gives her a crooked little smile and says, “Well there’s a lot about me that would surprise you.” Lois frowns a little as she looks up at him. Clark quickly looks away and appears to concentrate on dancing.
Lois feels herself rather enjoying being in Clark’s arms. She involuntarily murmurs, “You’re so warm.” [Remember, Lois tells Superman this in SR] At that moment, Richard interrupts their dance. “Sorry Clark, I need to steal my bride away from you. Honey, the Mayor just arrived. We should say hello.” Lois looks momentarily disappointed as she looks at Clark. Clark immediately assumes his slouch as he backs away and pushes his glasses up on his face. “Well gee, thanks for the dance Lois. It was swell.” Lois smiles at him and as she turns to walk away says, “Well, I guess I’ll see you around.” Clark, without thinking, responds, “I’m always around.” [Remember, this was Singer’s Superman’s tag line to Lois]
Lois stops in her tracks and turns to look at Clark. “What did you-”
Suddenly, a thunderous sound from above casts everyone’s attention upward. Lois feels herself being pulled back or blown back as the atrium roof falls in a shower of jagged glass. Richard is dragging her under a table. As she peeks up she sees people running all over the place. Lois sees Clark caught in a crowd of people rushing for the exit. Someone bumps the glasses off Clark’s face. Then Lois sees something so perfectly and clearly that she momentarily forgets the noise and chaos all around her. She sees Clark without his glasses on. Stunned she watches as he quickly drops to the floor to retrieve his glasses and then disappear into a dark hallway – away from an exit door.
She snaps back to the scene when she remembers Jason. She starts screaming, “Jason! Jason!” She scrambles out from under the table and fights through the melee as she looks frantically for her son. All of sudden she feels herself being grabbed by the waist and swept up. Richard is below screaming up at her “LOIS! LOIS!” Lois realizes she’s being pulled up on a rope into a hovering helicopter by a man wearing all black and a ski mask. As she’s thrown into the waiting chopper, she sees Jason being yanked up and thrown into a second hovering helicopter. Lois watches helplessly as she catches a glimpse of her terrified son’s face as it turns and flies off into the night in the opposite direction. [Plug in your own Superman v. Villain plotline here (but once they introduced Jason in SR, it’s a safe bet he’s getting his butt kidnapped in SR2)]

Epilogue….
All’s quiet now. Lois and Jason are safe. The Lane-White wedding has been rescheduled…again. Lois has been doing some thinking. That night, after Jason is sound asleep, she quietly turns to Richard and says, “I have something to tell you.”

Lois is on the roof of the Daily Planet, looking out at Metropolis. She pulls out a cigarette and her lighter when she hears a familiar voice behind her. “Didn’t we talk about the smoking thing?” This time she doesn’t jump. She knew he would be there. She turns to look at Superman. Slowly and deliberately, looking right at him, she brings the lighter to her cigarette and takes one long drag, inhaling deeply. Superman raises his eyebrows in surprise but says nothing. Never taking her eyes off him, she exhales the smoke deeply and slowly puts out the remaining cigarette.
Neither one says anything for a few seconds. Lois slowly starts circling Superman like an interrogator. Superman is watching her warily, confused by Lois’s behavior. Lois finally breaks the silence, “Why are you here?” Superman tilts his head in confusion. He doesn’t know what she’s asking. “To fight for truth, justice, and…” Lois cuts him off impatiently, “No, I mean HERE. On this roof. Right now.” Superman cautiously answers, “Because I want to be.” She stops directly in front of him. Quietly she asks, “How long can this go on?” Superman has no reply. His eyebrows are knitted in a tight frown now. He’s growing increasingly alarmed by the tenor of the conversation.
Lois shakes her head defeatedly, “Someone once said that you were a figment of somebody’s imagination, like Peter Pan, a fairy tale.” [Remember, from STM?] Lois looks down for a moment and then back up at Superman with determination, “And you know what? He was right. It’s time for me to grow up. I have bigger things to live for now. Bigger than me. Bigger,” she says smiling wanly, “than even you.” She swallows hard and delivers the final blow to her monologue, “There’s a good man in my life right now who…who I’ve treated so unfairly. He deserves better than this. Better than what I’ve given so far. I know he loves me, and now I know I love him.” Superman is speechless. His mind is reeling. “Starting tomorrow, everything’s going to be different.” She starts to back away toward the door. “It’s time to fly away, Peter Pan.” Lois quickly turns and shuts the door before Superman can say anything. He is left standing on the roof…alone.

The next day, Clark nervously comes into the office. He looks around dejectedly. He sees that Richard White’s office is still dark. Lois is not at her desk either. Jimmy rushes past him, and Clark asks, “Have you seen Lois?” Jimmy responds, “Nope. Not yet.” Perry White then yells to Clark, “Clark, get over here. You have to cover the bank story today.” Clark asks, “Where’s Lois?” Shuffling papers on his desk, Perry replies, “Some family thing. She’s not coming in today.” Clark walks back to his desk, looks over at Lois’s empty desk and then back at Richard’s dark office. Clark's reverie is broken by the receptionist who yells over, “Clark, line 1. It’s your mother!” Clark immediately picks up the phone.
“Mom?”
“Hello Clark,” Martha Kent’s voice drifts back over the line.
Clark worriedly asks, “Is everything alright?”
There’s a brief pause, “Yes. No. Well, I’m not sure… There’s someone here who wants to talk to you…”
A new voice comes on, “Hi Clark, it’s Lois. I thought it was time Jason and Grandma met…”
Clark looks straight ahead in shock and says, “Oh sh-”

Camera cuts. End of movie. Stay tuned for SR 3.

Thanks for reading. Comments? Your Ideas?

Another female POV here...
:-> YES dancing; NO bad-guy Cyclops

Otherwise, me too!!! I *love* Routh's Clark. Love the romantic angle of the Superman saga in general. Please, please, please, next director, put something very much like this into the next film.

Specific critiques:
LOVE the dancing-by-accident bit. So romantic :-> Yes, he probably could dance quite well - didn't get "meek" until moving to Metropolis, so he would have gone to high school dances. We can hope, anyway! Gotta have some kidnapping or other big distraction at the party too. Lines sound reasonable for the most part. I'm not sure Lois would even need to see him w/o his glasses after the other comments - might want to drag that out a bit and have the glasses come off by accident during a later incident where Lois & Clark are both present. Then again, all in one scene would elicit a nice big gasp from the audience.

LOVE the idea of Clark looking for her at work, and she's not there. I could see Lois - especially Teri Hatcher's Lois - just showing up at the Kent farm with the kid. Wonder how Martha would take it, though, since Clark basically never talked to her after the beginning of SR and he SHOULD HAVE. He'd have to catch her up at the end of SR:II beforehand - I don't know that he'd keep a kid a secret from his mom. They could then have a "NOT the last of my kind - not exactly" comment in the conversation somewhere. I think Martha would be very hurt if she found out she had a grandson Clark hadn't told her about, no matter how hurt he was about it. If she can keep Clark's secret, she can keep the kid's.

Don't think Richard would force Lois' hand. Ever. He has raised the kid and is basically his dad - even the kid calls him Daddy. He has been in this not-quite-committed relationship for a long time, possibly as long as five years (clear up the timeline already, next director!!!) But remember, he swallowed his ego and let Lois AND Jason go into the hospital. He flew back to save a drowning Superman even though he wasn't sure he'd be able to get the plane out of there. Richard and Superman worked well together despite their mutual jealousy... I think perhaps Lois might panic and try to marry Richard, being so human and neurotic... or maybe some distance from Superman might make her think she ought to take what she has. Don't have a good solution, but I don't like the Richard-making-her bit because *Richard* seems too good and noble a man to do that.

Don't think this should be an engagement/pre-wedding party either - too much like Mary Jane & the astronaut, like Bridget Jones & [Colin Firth]... Could become too predictable. A totally unrelated party would be better - fundraiser for Metropolis earthquake reconstruction, Perry gets engaged (to some Elvis-lover he met on a trip, hopefully! Gotta channel Lois & Clark from TV some :-> ), even a casual summer party with a lot of dancing - anniversary of the Planet, perhaps, which would explain Jason's presence?

I say Lois takes off Clark's glasses and says "Oh my God! You're Superman."

I think Clark has no reason not to tell her everything & come clean. In fact thanks to Jason I think Lois has a right to know about who Clark is. There should be no mystery Clark should come clean & Clark knows Lex knows about Jason being Supermans son so Clark should just tell Lois & get it over with giving him one less thing to worry about.

Jason tells Lois that CLark is Superman since he noticed who Clark was in Superman Returns. Why didn't he tell his mother Richard in SR, kinda weird huh!

i've been thinking about this too.

Backstory. Brainiac is the villian. Lois thinks Jason is dying as his powers come in, but doesn't tell Supes out of conflict with Richard's feelings. Richard knows it's Supes kid. Clark has been doing things for Jason and keeping an eye on him from afar.

I kept it simple. Lois finds Clark's clothes in the elevator shaft after he flies off to stop Brainiac( Jimmy and other staffers are caught in the elevator from Brainiac's attack). She begins to notice all the things Clark has done throughout the movie and past memories and begins to put two and two together. She doesn't fully convince herself until the third movie.

How about filmmakers pretend like Lois and Clark's relationship isn't the end all be all, of a Superman movie? How about they let him be a hero, without constantly worrying about Lois' well being?

It's a sad state of things when the best Lois and Clark relationship is on the 90's animated series. Where there is an attraction, but they keep things professional.
It allows him to function better as Superman, and you never saw him following Lois home

The really sad state of affairs was that Superman the hero wasn't even the second most important thing. Second in the film was "his place in the world" and all that crap. It's very apparent that Singer doesn't understand what a superhero is and what their purpose is. Both in the context of the fantasy and reality. Superheros are heroic first, everything else is a distant footnote. It's that simple. Until Singer stops inserting his own feelings about his own life into a any Superhero movie, we'll continue to get this watered down stuff.

I thought the writing and ideas to be quite good - People who need it compacted - loosen up and give up three minutes of your time and read it - its pretty good IMO. Assuming they have the right amount of action and fun this type of scenereo would lend the movie some heart. I know there were complaint sthat SR was a soap opera and I can understand that but we don't want to loose all of the human experience in a Superman movie - this angle captures it quite nicely - again as long as it is part of a bigger, action filled Superman adventure!

Overall I thought it was quite good, but I'm female. There were a few things I take exception to, for one, Clark saying, "Oh shi .." I think it would be fine as a plot contrivance, but I don't think the movie should revolve around the romance. It's a nice side story that humanizes Superman, but the main focus should be on him, his inner conflicts, and of course, some serious kick ass action. Hopefully, if there is another movie made, he'll do more than lift things.

I have to say that I thought it was pretty good. I don't like the "Oh sh.." moment. It just seems totally out of character. I do think that Lois revealing that she knows might be a great cliffhanger for the movie though.

I think it should go, That Lois Knows she just giving him the cold shoulder, Kind of How she did in Returns, When she spun around coming out of the Daily Planet and gave the whole "Taking off speech". Lois needs more credit than that, She is a reporter right! Plus if he had erased her memory or the whole rewinding the planet thing, She knows, If you want to know the ordeal Knock up some chic then run off for a few years then show up at her doorstep YEAH! she will be very excited to see you. Seriously they could play it off as she remembers just knew that if she spoke up she would put her Jason, and everyone else Clark/Superman cares about in danger.

This is a brilliant piece. I love how it stays true to the SR universe. The scene with Clark looking at the 'perfect family' is heart-wrecking. I think the dynamic could have been balanced by introducing an original (i.e. not from SIII) Lana Lang.
