Oh there should definitely be a decent gap in between RDJ's Stark and whoever the unlucky guy is who has to follow him. 7-10 years sounds about right.

I do not think you need to wait 7- 10 years for the next actor to be replaced. Bond has been replaced, so has batman and the joker. So have many other characters in film. They could have Iron Man 4 have an older Tony Stark or something and use the comics when Tony is older for that films story line.

I think Robert Downey Jr IS the cinematic Tony Stark, the same way that Harrison Ford IS Indiana Jones or Bruce Willis IS John McClane. And to me, getting a new actor to play Stark - be it for a sequel or a reboot - would be like getting a new actor to play Jones or McClane: yes, they COULD do it, and eventually they probably WILL do it, but that doesn't make it any less stupid. It just won't be the same.

Hopefully, Robert appreciates how IM save his career and he will continue making them as long as Marvel wants him and he's age appropriate.
Sean C. and Roger M. both continued making Bond movies long after they should have, so I am not sure I want to see that happen here, but he's got at least another ten years worth or more so keep them coming! |

But Tony Stark/Iron Man has been around for nearly 50 years now and there are many takes on the character. I find this to be true about most superheroes. They're more like James Bond in that many actors can do the role. The role is bigger than any one actor. Now some(like Reeves, Connery, RDJ) are tough acts to follow to be sure but I'd rather see them attempt it than chicken out.

The more I think about it, the more I believe after RDJ we're gonna need someone to be the sacrificial lamb...so to speak. I mean, think about it. Both the Bond movies and the Superman* movies(and even the Batman movies to a lesser extent) had this happen. Lazenby, Routh(and even Kilmer & Clooney) came in as filler for one movie so the audience could say "Bah, he's nowhere near as good as 'so & so'" and then they dump the actor for someone else and by then the transition isn't so hard to take. It's uncertain whether Andrew Garfield will suffer this fate in the upcoming ASM movie. Unlike Connery/Bond, Reeves/Superman or RDJ/Iron Man; I think Maguire's Spider-Man was more in line with Keaton's Batman in the sense that both did an obviously acceptable job but never completely nailed the role like the first 3 I mentioned did. So we may be getting an actor as Stark for a single film that may not do so hot and then get another recast that is accepted better.
*Of course this still has yet to be fully realized here but I feel confident that Henry Cavill will own the role much more than Routh ever did. It's not exactly a hard act to follow.

I'd say people said the same about Sean Connery as James Bond. Downey's great, but he can be replaced.

But the thing is with Tony Stark, the audience is already aware of Downey Jr's interpretation and anyone remotely trying to match his charisma on screen would be viewed as copying Downey or being no where near as good as him. I feel bad for the guy next in line, it would be like filling in the Joker's shoes after what Ledger did. Downey made himself a household name with Iron Man as did Ledger with the Joker. Marvel fears replacing him. EDIT: yeah, Marvel may need a sacrificial lamb for Iron Man haha

Yep as much as I love RDJ's interpretation, he can be replaced. But like it's been said a sacraficial lamb will be required.

I don't understand why there has to be an IM4, IM5, IM6, IM7.......IM100!
They just stretch these superhero movies too much! Round up a trilogy and end with up. The Iron Man movies were pretty solid (at least the 1st) and if the 3rd will be great too, it's gonna be perfect!

Therefor it is an issue WHO will play that role. I think a change of actors would work if it happens in Avengers 2 and will be addressed similiar to how they addressed the recast of Rhodey in IM2. This will get the new actor the acceptance of the fanbase and MIGHT lead to a second IM trilogy

A reboot is just another adaptation of the same character... And the new Spider-Man is not the same story.

My opinion who should be the next Tony? Joshua Jackson. History with alcoholism, looks like a young George Clooney who ought to be Tony Stark if RDJ's not doing it.
I wonder if they go with the Teen Tony scheme as an excuse to extend the life of Tony Stark in Marvel movieverse if RDJ calls it enough. |

Why not just stop at 3 issues in a comic then???? I think if a character can survive hundreds of issues in a comic, there might be enough material for more than 3 movies. |

No doubt he has done a great job, but this type of role could be played by a fair amount of actors. It is always easier to cast hero roles where they have a costume that covers their face. In this case, covers everything.
