4 times..STILL amazing!! Have some questions though...need clarification

Ok...so I've now seen Thor 4 times...this movie is just all kinds of awesome. I am still plauged by a couple things and was wondering if anyone can answer these:

What is 'Odin's' sleep? Loki said to his mother that he can't stand seeing his father like this 'each time' or something to that effect. Is this something Odin falls into every now and then and there is a chance he may not wake up? Was his argument with Loki something that set it off prematurely and it was supposed to happen but not that soon? Is it something in the mythology or just made for the comic/movie?

Also in the comics IS Loki the son of King Laufey the King of the Frost Giants? I don't understand how he turned out to be a smaller boy than a usual Frost Giant..was he kind of the equivelant to a premature baby? But he wasn't malformed..and did Odin just use his magical powers to turn Loki into a 'normal' boy that would grow up to be a man and not a Frost Giant?

Odin said that he took the baby because he one day hoped to unite both Kingdoms and worlds...how is kidnapping Laufeys son going to accomplish this? Odin did say he was abandoned and left for dead or something like that..but when you look at that Frost Giant homeworld I wouldn't assume even a 5 star Ramada Inn would be inviting..maybe Laufey was just leaving his baby, whom he loved in a basket away from the harm and the battle that was going on and Odin just snatched him up? Did he say all that 'uniting kingdoms' thing just to make Loki feel better I wonder?

Also was that blue glowing cube, the source of the Frost Giants power the reason they were able to transport themselves from world to world. I know the Bifrost with Heimdall is the trasport system/portal/wormhole machine that allows Asgardians to travel from realm to realm or world to world..can anyone else travel in these realms or is all that travelling jazz just soley for Asgardians and the Frost Giants were lucky to travel just because of that cube.

AND how can Thor fly? I mean isn't that a little far fetched? I mean.....

totally kidding about that last question but..yeah if anyone can help with the others, I'm just still kinda scratching my head thinking maybe I missed something is all

The Odin Sleep is a tradition. Odin goes into it to replenish his energies. This time it came too early though.

Loki was the son of Laufey, but yea, you could say he was born prematurely or something. And Laufey abandoned him, as mentioned by Odin. Proabably because he was too weak. Think the Spartan babies in 300. If they were weak or sickly they were basically thrown away. I think that's what they were going for here.

Originally in the comics Thor didn't really fly, but he did throw his hammer and would hang onto the strap and it would pull him through the air.

The Odin sleep was early because of the emotional stress caused by Thor's banishment , a war delcared between the frost giants and Asgard and Loki going off on Odin.

Loki is what you consider the runt of the litter, so Laufey ashamed that his son was so small left him to die. I dont know about his mother though, she was never mentioned. In the comics Laufey was killed by Odin and he found Loki in the aftermath of the battle.

Odin did take pity on Loki but once he learned his was Laufey's son he saw a greater purpose for him, which was as explained that he would create peace between the two kingdoms.It was like Odin said at the beginning of the movie that Loki and Thor were born to be kings but he never ment for Loki to rule Aagard but the frost planet. Odin disguised him as a Asgardian so he wouldn't know the truth and he would fit in .

However he did not consider the fact that the giant planet was not the most inviting place and his people left him to die, so why would Loki want to return there. Thats what helps fuel Loki's rage in wanting to destroy the planet and kill the people that left him out in the cold, and to prove himself to Odin.

Its the answer Loki has been looking for his whole life, as to why he wasnt viewed as good as Thor. Like he said Odin did not want a frost giant on the throne of Asgard.

Odin's plan backfired bigtime by not telling Loki and he goes ape **** , I felt so sorry for Loki . I was rooting for him in this movie !

No, Frigg say's the Odinsleep was late because he had been putting it off presumably until he could get Thor on the throne. They were caught unprepared because the stress of Thor's banishment, impending war and Loki's anger induced it like a heart attack.

saw it the third time yesterday and noticed sumthin that struck me as odd...when thor and loki were hanging off the edge of the bifrost why didnt thor just fly up? i noticed he didnt have his hammer but couldnt he summon it and then fly to safety?

Think of the Odin Sleep as a battery being recharged on a recharger.
Depending on how active Odin is depends on when he Goes into the OdinSleep, on an AVERAGE it's supposed to be around winter.

Wasn't Loki hanging on to the handle of the hammer?

I think Loki was hanging onto the staff that he used in his fight against Thor.

The thing that I'm wondering about is that if the Frost Giant King could be killed by just two blasts from Odin's staff, then how the heck did he survive the war with Asgard to begin with since the film had shown that he participated in battles against Odin?

maybe he was never directly hit with two staff blasts.
and, i'm pretty sure loki was hanging onto the staff. so why didnt thor fly?

OH and it was the staff not the hammer...

..and just a thought on the discussion---I for one? Am SO glad Loki fell into the abyss there...it was an epic and awesome ending and finale to the battle he had had with Thor--it was so awesome watching him fall--it would have been far less satisfying and it would have downright pissed me off had he had been 'saved' or raised up and didn't fall. He should have fell, and I'm glad they decided to make that happen it was so wicked, period.

Also he WAS in fact holding onto the battle staff, I promise you--not the hammer.
