Felt like an 80's fantasy epic throwback

Who else thought so? it felt like one of those 80's fantasy epics like Clash of the Titans, Willow, Conan 1 & 2, Dark crystal, Heavy Metal, Fire and Ice, Excalibur etc.

I guess the filmmakers were aiming at that approach.

well it DOES have certain simillarities with MOTU, but it was much, much better...

Well I can see the comparisons, but Asgard alone shows it's not.

There's some Flash Gordon in Asgard. The original poster is not THAT far off. Although I think that's a film from the 70's.

heh FR man, Flash Gordon was from the 70's....I had the vhs tape AND the sound track on an ALBUM.

nope. didn't feel like that to me either. Thor is my absolute favorite comic-book film next to TIH and IM.

It definitely was, just one with a higher budget. I don't know why people can't see it. Dolph's MOTU is basically a template for this film.

Really? A blonde hero with a red cape is sent to Earth and must return to his fantasy homeland in order to defeat a villain who has gained the throne through his treacherous ways. That seems like a accurate description of both films. Masters of the Universe even has Skeletor falling into the bottomless pit!

Considering that your described a story which has been told with Thor several times in the comics, and that character is much older than 'motu'... No, it didn't feel like it.

I'm not saying that Kenneth Branagh (the huge Dolph Lundgren fan he is) set out to remake MOTU, but it's just silly to say that Thor has nothing to do with the fantasy films of the 80s'.

I agree with that except for the 80's part. If a Thor film were made in the 80's it would have a different feel. But I do see what you are saying.

There were some Heavy Metal, Conan and Excalibur elements including the whole sword in the stone thing but with a hammer instead of a sword.
