Having a voice alteration does not automatically make him the new Darth Vader.
For one, a majority of people understood what Vader says. Two, Vader was a villain created from scratch, Bane is an adaptation of a character. |

Darth Vader is a supremely mainstream villain.
Bane, is not. And regardless of how popular this movie is, it will not be as widespread or long lasting as starwars. |

Half of what made Vader such a badass was James Earl Jones' voice.

Well yea, that and he's more a fallen hero who acts as a future vision of what Luke could become. Lets just pretend those new movies don't exist.

In terms of badassery, I agree with the OP.

A lot of people thought that Nicholson's joker was supreme.
And now was that true? This is only a comparision, i'm not saying he'll take Vader's place, I'm just saying he could be a great villian in todays history |

To be honest Ive never seen and dont see any similarities between vader and Bane. Just because of the mask that is connected to the nervous system? Nah, not by a long shot. Banes a totally different animal

I really don't see much of a comparison. They're both big, tough, and have a mask like thing going on. That's not a whole lot.

Chuck Dixon says Darth Vader was actually the inspiration for the Bane character.
I just made that up. |

Even though Bane's pretty front-and-center and the commander of a small militia...he feels more Boba Fett than Vader for some reason. Kinda' more mysterious in a 'free agent' kind of way.
I do't think you can really have another 'Vader' status of movie villain unless you establish something with a scope and setup like Star Wars...and by then, it'd be labeled as trying to 'be like Vader' anyways. ![]()

I don't agree at all. It was totally the opposite. It's what makes the final battle in Return of The Jedi one of the best and most satisfying on screen. |

It gave it a bit more meaning, but it was still a lame movie and ending. I like the idea of the story and all, it's just that the execution really faltered after Empire.

In what way did it falter and why was it lame?

Darth Vader turning out to NOT be a one dimensional "pure evil" bad guy, despite his previous actions in the films, is what makes him such a great character.

Vader's background, his tragedy, and heck...the Jedi altogether...had more impact when we didn't see their history and it was shrouded in mystery. The portrayed fact that he was that whiny, wooden and annoying young Anakin that we saw in laughably bad movies did not enrich him as a character, nor the movies altogether as a series. Again, the concept was interesting, but ultimately worked better left unseen...because the delivery was rather unbearable.

I agree. It also enhanced the characters around him. The emporer seems under the impression Luke is guaranteed to be exactly like him. And Luke has deep faith that he still has good in him to the point that he doesn't kill him when he has the opportunity too. You actually see Vader thinking over it while Luke begs to be saved. And thanks Luke for showing him. It's really great and sure better than he was in a new hope. |

ROTJ is definitely the weakest of the original movies. But the final battle between Luke and Vader, and Vader killing the Emperor, is brilliant.

As far as a flat out bad guy goes, I thought the Emporer was better than Vader.
He doesn't just do it, he bloody loves it! To the point he's giggling for joy like a little kid. |

They are two entirely different characters but some similarities can be drawn, both are monsters created from extreme pain.
It makes me wonder that possibly the cause of the problem that Bane wears that mask is his own fault.
