You're not the only one - Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily agrees with you:

Quote:
...the Academy has its head up its ass for not nominating the final Harry Potter movie. Think about it: there were 8 movies in this franchise and not a rotten one among the bunch. How rare is that for Hollywood? I do believe that if all those acting roles had been filled with American thesps instead of British, and more production and post jobs done in this country rather than across the Atlantic, then more Academy members would have voted for the pic out of sheer self-interest. Anyway, Harry Potter was effing robbed.

Huge Potter fan but it not having any recognition this year was fine with me. Even with a Best Picture nod it would have just been a gimme with no shot of winning.

Alan Rickman deserved something. Jonah Hill getting a nomination, but nothing for Rickman (as well as several more talented actors than Hill) is an atrocity.

I said all year that Alan Rickman deserved a nomination, and people thought I was just a Harry Potter fanboy...

Now they're coming around. If you watch his work throughout the series as Snape, culminating in the GUT WRENCHING flashback in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II it's hard to imagine him NOT getting a nomination. The Academy got it right recognizing Nolte's work in Warrior but COMPLETELY missed the mark by snubbing Rickman.

True, which is why it just didn't matter to me aside from the fact I didn't think it deserved it. But to a lot of fans I'm sure they would've like a nomination as recognition. I agree that out of the major awards Rickman deserved it the most.

I would have liked a Best Picture nomination, and I'd have liked one for Part 1 as well (it would have been rather odd to have one half of a movie nominated, but not the other). Not because, "Oh, it'd be a great way to honor the series," but because I found it to be as good as the films that were nominated, the ones I saw, in addition to the best movie I saw and best movie experience I had last year. It's still those things, even without a Best Picture nomination.

Exactly. And I remember that Judi Dench got an Oscar for her small role in Shakespeare in Love as Queen Elizabeth despite the fact that other nominees in that category have had more screentime in their respective films than she did. Jonah Hill really can't hold a candle to Alan Rickman, and Rickman deserved to be nominated, not Hill. Whether Rickman could've actually beaten Plummer for the Oscar is irrelevant.

anyone else think 2011 was a very weak year for movies?

granted, i haven't really been interested enough to see a couple of the films that were nominated, but i just haven't been impressed.

i just saw midnight in paris; fantastic film, and probably the only movie from 2011 i think will stick with me.

I don't think it was a weak year particularly for movies overall, but for Oscar movies, espcially in comparison to the year before, it was a weak year.

I dont know if Im just ticked off or what but this show sucked this year. Every joke Billy Crystal told bombed and I hate when they sing and dance to open a show and especially when I couldnt understand what he was saying. Same as with slumdog and kings speech or even other best pictures I have no desire to see the Artist at all. You are gonna tell me that in this HD age where were pushing 3D, High definition that a silent black and white movie wins best picture? Over a great movie like the help? Moneyball? The Descendants? Andy serkis essentially did the same thing in Planet of the Apes so why didnt he get a nom?

Also guys like oldman who are beyond overdue and clooney and pitt to an extent you give it to a first time unknown actor who just relied on facial expressions that any of the other actors could have done in there sleep? Then you turn around and give it to Meryl streep again? Thats like giving a world title to ric flair for a 17th time, they dont need it. Michele Williams was more then deserving as well as the lady from the help. Just a pitfiful show this year mates. I wouldnt be surprised if the ratings really take a dip this year. You know they sure like to promote the big movies in the opening credits every year but never give them any best picture recognition and only treat it as the lower budget category.

I think The Artist wins have more to do with "Oscar porn" (as some have labeled it) more than the movie being more deserving than any other this year. Yes, it's a ballsy move, creating a silent in this day and age, but it also screams "novelty act." The Academy is made up largely of grumpy old white men, and a movie like this caters to their nostalgia for the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Yes, I agree that awarding the Best Actor to the French guy will turn out to be one of Oscar's biggest missed-the-boat moments....I'd be very surprised if this guy gets a major career beyond this film, and I'd be very surprised if The Artist is still remembered as fondly, say, ten years from now. Or even five years from now.

You don't understand how difficult it is to tell a story or convey emotions with no dialogue, do you?

I haven't seen The Artist yet but the bolded is beyond ignorant.

Wow, what an unpredictable Oscar show... Meryl Streep winning being about the only one. And Woody Allen winning for Midnight in Paris which was great to see. Other than that it was either a Hugo or Artist award show.

But the presentation was much better this year. Crystal was great and it never really got boring. I think it was shorter than last year's too.

It might be a shock for you but overhere Dujardin is a known actor, he is one of "our" stars.
Of course he will not last long in Hollywood like almost every foreign actors and will play the french cliché ad mauseum and will vanish like Jean Reno & Co.
Do you remember movies which won an Oscar from 10 years ago ? I don't.

Maybe you should throw the Serkis part in bold too, not ignorant at all, Andy Serkis did the same thing for ceasar and didnt speak at all except saying no. All they did was put a digital ape over his body but the performance and facial features were still there so why did Andy go unoticed and this guy get the academy wetting there pants. I saw the Artist thanks to a buddy of mine at the movies for free and I wasnt that impressed with the movie or this actor to be honest. I was more blown away by Serkis breathing life into a digital character and making me care for him for 2 hours.

I have to respectably disagree on this one. Did you notice everytime he told a joke the room was quiet and they werent funny at all. Also the presentation sucked audio wise because of the wierd microphone feedback for most of the show. The show felt longer to me this year.

Thats why alot of people continue to bash the oscars because movies like these win and the ones people pay good money too see dont get crap. Atleast Marion cottilard has done some big movies since winnig hers and christop waltz has kept it going. What has Javier bardem done since he won? I cant see this guy doing much in america anyway after this ethier.

The point im trying to make is I think its time for the oscars to give a big movie or two a win to atleast show the public big movies matter besides serving as income to make the smaller movies get the awards.

I hope the ratings tanked last night. Especially if a lot of people switched over to The Walking Dead at 9 & said **** the Oscars

Well that's part of it. At the Oscars the little seen films that are still great get some reward. Films should be rewarded on how great they are, blockbuster or small indie, whatever.

So because more people bought tickets for a certain film that should get rewarded? No.

I think The Artist or Hugo winning is quite unusual and fresh really. Recent years the Oscars usually go to some heavy, super serious period film or drama. The old English period films is what you'd call Oscar bait.

But The Artist and Hugo are breezy, charming and fun. (that's what they seems to be from what i've heard and read).

They are not going to get the main stream audience & especially the younger ones to watch if movies they like are not even nominated. I doubt even if the Twilight fans heard Twilight was used in a montage. They will be watching next year. The Oscars are a dying breed

Nope, Serkis did a good job but the performance didn't solely rely on him, the mere fact that it's a mo-cap character is the reason why they couldn't nominate him. The animators had a hand in the final results.

Maybe. But crap like Twilight shouldn't be mentioned at the Oscars. They're crap films.

Harry Potter should have gotten more noms though. But that's a popular film that deserved recognition. There shouldn't be compromises of quality just to include popular films.
