While back I sketched out Leo.
![]() Personally, I think that the turtles in the first movie is the definitive look. I'm not really liking the deviations I'm seeing here. I understand that 20 years later, people want to see something new, but there's a fine line between doing something new for the sake of it, and doing something new to improve (thats not to say I'm trying to tute my own horn or anything. I was literally just mindlessly doodling when I made that image).

I really think they should stick with the Eastman and Laird original design. In fact, I mean really try to do something more akin to issue #1. Eschew the longer tails on the bandanas in favor of a smaller tie. And instead of the belt being more of a strap, make it tie like a martial arts belt. And instead of having Leo wear his scabbards in an X across his back have them both on the right. I prefer that look.
I don't mind identifiers for the Turtles, or personal flair.... but I'm not keen on some of the over designs I see here. Sure, give Raph a hoodie when he wants to walk the streets... but there's no need for that as his general look. And Leo could have a Buddhist rosary when he's hanging out at home but wearing that in combat would be senseless. |

Have to say that's a pretty good look for Leonardo, if they aged up the character. Look the pre-teen ninja turtles here.

Which do you guys prefer: fully CGI, animatronic, or something in between?
I watched the original film this morning (it had been forever) and I was actually surprised at the glaring tells/mistakes in the turtles suits. In fact, the very first time we see them, the suits stop at the knees, even though the legs are clearly in the shot (keep your eye out as they jump into frame right after the title). This is something I would hope the improvent of animatronics would be able to avoid, but certain things I'd want to see would be impossible without CGI (exressive faces, muscle movement, etc). Then again, I wouldn't want to watch the movie knowing that the turtles are 100% digital. It kinda takes away the magic in a live action setting. |

Considering the budget (13 million) and how old it is (22 years ago), it actually looks pretty good.
After seeing a movie like the Planet of the Apes, I'd be content with CGI. If it's done well. |

The combination of the suits and animatronics with CGI to correct any errors or enhance them would be perfect.

Oh, i'm not trying to say the suits look bad. I was just pointing out the limitations and errors that animatronics are heir to. While today's animatronics are vastly superior, they're still not going to be able to do certain things.

^ It's interesting, but again, maybe a bit too over-designed?
I'm definitely seeing a pattern with a lot of the fan art just being far too busy. If some of these concepts were put into action these would end up being the least effective ninjas ever, and would likely be a pain to animate (CG or otherwise). Great effort, though. Some very talented folks out there.

There's too much blue. Like the 80's cartoon trying to be hardcore. The buttons are completely unnecessary as well. Other than that, it's pretty good.

I don't dislike it. But the colors are a bit off. I actually like that it's a bit more fierce looking. Long as you don't lose the emotion in the face.
It's a mutated turtle wielding two swords. It should be a little intimidating. I hope they make regular use of throwing stars in the movie. Those could be quite handy. I don't see why the turtles can't have more "busy" designs. They're usually quite plain. Give them some individuality. |

You can give them individuality without having them look "busy".

I like it. It looks exactly like a realistic mutant turtle. Only thing, the tmnt were mutant pond/red ear sliders. This Leo looks like a mutated galapogos tortoise.

No need to overcomplicate it. Just go with the most general design from the books, and leave it at that. Doubt they'll deviate too much from how they've looked in the movies, including the CG one. Considering the studios and people behind it, they're not gonna look butt ugly, they will have some semblance of cuteness to them, but still look like they can **** somebody up.

I actually really dig this. Get rid of all the unnecessary string, and a few minor details here and there, and I'd be 100% on board.

I think it looks cool only as an art project, but I don't want to see that for two hours straight in a movie
