Can Anyone explain the 9 realms to me using common man language?

I'm a big comic book guy but Thor solo series were never really part of my upbrining. I loved the Movie, I think as far as whole Marvel movies go Thor is the best movie of the lot (RDJ makes Iron Man more interesting, but I think Thor is the most well made movie if that makes sense) however I do not understand the 9 realms

is Earth alone midgard? Is the Milky Way midgard? are the 'realms" kind of inter-dimensional planets that all exist in the same universe but on different planes....is each realm it's own universe?
