I've asked this before, but what isn't superfluous? Aside from a few that have a relevant functionality (like Batman's bat-motif since he's trying to make an urban legend of himself to give himself a psychological edge), most superhero costumes are superfluous in of themselves. The designs don't have any logical meaning, they just look the way they do to be visually appealing.
Captain America's costume is similar to Batman in that it's meant to be symbolic, though rather than inspiring fear in criminals, it's meant to inspire courage and patriotism (I assume). On the other hand, with Spider-man, there's nothing particularly meaningful about his suit. The only aspects that really reflect the character are the webbing pattern and spider symbols, the colors or their placement don't mean anything. The suit might as well be red all over or blue all over or even sold black like the Venom suit. Why red and blue? Why red in those specific places? Why red on the front but not on the back? Why blue "pants"? Why red stripes along the arms? There's nothing particularly logical about those choices, it's just all in the name of visual appeal, nothing more, nothing symbolic about it. If you all would quit with the microscope analyzing of Superman's new suit, you would realize that giving an outfit "superfluous" details such as seams is nothing new and something that has been in practice long before Superman was even created.

He needs the red trunks. He looks naked without them.
Everything else is good though.

I would say the new Superman suit sucks but since it is the least horrible, I can .... "tolerate" it, in some weird ways. Don't get me started with the MoS suit ![]() Dc has clearly operated a Marvel-isation |

Excuse me for posting the first page picture, but I can't stand how he puts on the suit in this reboot. Apart from that, I hate that stupid collar he has, but I can accept the fact that he has no longer the underpants.

No, they don't. Their costumes have other things going on that distract from not having trunks: the sash like belt on Captain Marvel, the more ornate cape, the gauntlets, and the pirate boots, plus the flap on the shoulder. Cap's costume is so busy that trunks would be too much. With Flash, he has the lightening bolts on his forearms, the belt, the wings on his mask and on his boots, again trunks would be too much on what is a pretty busy costume. With Superman and Batman, the simplicity of their costumes is what makes them work, and without the trunks they look too bland. The trunks fit the rest of their costumes because of how simple and straightforward they are. Now they have replaced the trunks with a bunch of seams in the 52 costume and the tramp stamp on the MOS suit, and in both cases they look stupid, much more stupid than the trunks ever did.
If capes and trunks are stupid then superheroes are stupid. Last edited by Kurosawa; 04-14-2012 at 02:19 AM. |

Personally, I think that Batman's suit looks better without the trunks. I think that he has enough going on with his costume to where it works without them. Superman on the other hand needs the trunks. Like you said, it's too bland.

I think when people render Superman's costume with a bit of shadowing, it looks fine without the trunks. They can't do the super-bright blue they used to use on his costume anymore, though.

One day those guys in charge at DC must be punished. The wrath of god will not be needed, as we are here.

I've warmed up to the new Super suit. At first I was crying that was sacrilegious but I've got plenty of much more classic books laying around with Superman is his normal suit. Still hate the collar with all of my hate though.

I don't mind the new suit too much. I prefer the old suit, and the collar on the new one just seems odd, but my biggest problem with the visuals of the New 52 Superman is how young he looks. I don't know why, but to me he looks at least five years too young to be Superman. Maybe it's because they got rid of the "S curl" in his hair, but to me he looks older in the comics that are apparently set five years ago.

I'm getting used to it, every day I miss the trunks less n less and I'm one of the few who actually like the collar I really hope they don't get rid of it like they scrapped putting new Wonder Woman in pants (which I was in favor of). Those boots though, uggh... at first they looked clunky and not at all stylish

I prefer the latter because it's an actual costume. Superman, of all people, should embrace the superhero costume. The new costume doesn't even look all that bad once you get used to it. It's still ugly, sure, but you can start to tune out some of the unnecessary linework if you try.

Every hero has gone through refinements and updates in his suit, trying to keep up with the times. Some more than others. Superman is the most iconic of them all, but he's become the old toy from your childhood that you keep on your bookcase but never play with anymore. You love him, but he's not that cool, so you play with newer ones.
I can understand if the new suit is not to everyone's taste, god knows it has a few seams to many, but if changing the suit just a bit means that Superman instantly becomes cool again for the modern audience, that he's reinvigorated, with comics, cartoons, movies and the people embracing him again, then why not? Wanting Superman to stay the same because that's how he was when we grew up makes us pretty self important and arrogant dont you think? That's how DC editorial makes decisions and we hate that dont we? The mentality that adapting or updating is something only other, lesser characters need to do will keep him iconic, but also outdated. After all, i think even Siegel and Shuster themselves would want Superman to still be relevant and to still appeal to people in 2012. Even they'd recognize that their fashion sense could perhaps one day become outdated. After all, DC barely changed the suit. I'm sure the seams will get phazed out along the way, so what's left? The lack of underpants, a suave collar. Here's a pic of superhero suits that changed. I saved the best for last!

Several of those weren't really improvements, and Superman's always been cool.

the unparalleled iconography of superman is directly related to his suit and look. to change that is to distance people from what they are familiar with.
and superman's "cool factor" has to do with his character and stories. if you want superman to be "cool", then write good stories that are engaging and intelligent and fun and embody everything the character is meant to be.

That's your opinion. It's a subjective issue after all. The thing is that this is something all heroes have gone through.
