I wouldn't have any reservations about visiting, but I don't think I could ever work there.

The buzz on some forums is that they're cheaping out on the tower as it nears completion.

The latest affront is that they've stripped the spire down to just an ugly antenna like the North Tower of the old WTC had. This also means it won't reach the iconic 1,776 feet it was supposed to, because antennas aren't counted as parts of the structure. It will only be 1,368 feet or so.

I still think that building a tower was dumb. I think subtle was better in this case. An understated park with a statue and memorial would've been a far better tribute, IMO.

I'm fine with the Freedom Tower going up and the design for the New York memorial to me is very nice. What I don't like are those who think that the twin towers and the former design should have been completely rebuilt and then fortified to withstand a plane suicide bombing or that it was such a big deal that it was the tallest building in New York again. Neither shows the humility Americans should have after the attacks in 2001. The mainstream media loves to tout these accomplishments as if the US is six months into the war on Terror and the towers were rebuilt in 2006 like they first supposed too be. No humility for them whatsoever just celebrating death, building bigger monuments to American capitalism, and the idea of US exceptionalism.

Does anyone know of the "precautions" they've put in in the new Trade center? I remember reading about how the entire building is pretty much on iron stilts and encased in cement, just in case an attack from the ground takes place. I believe, with the old WTC the outer shell supported the building, but now they had a thick inner structure to it.
But I do hate that they had to make it "bigger and better." It looks great,no doubt. But,now it's an even bigger target, imo.
If I ever had the chance to visit,I'd be more interested in visiting the 9/11 memorial and the reflecting pools and paying my respects, than the Trade center itself.

I'd agree with you on that one. If my loved one died in the building I really wouldn't want to see it rebuilt like a sitting duck.

Buildings aren't just tributes though. This is being built to make up for what was lost when the original buildings were destroyed.

We didn't need figures like Glenn Beck acting like the new buildings had to be rebuilt in a rush as fast as say the Empire State Building was in the 1920s. I think the actual time it took was a little too long, but also shows Americans are not so simple in thinking anymore because they are planning out a thorough and complicated building space to aesthetically give the right feeling back to New York after the attacks. Plus it's filling in the space for not only one, but two buildings larger than the Empire State Building actually is.

I think it's safe to say "Freedom Tower" is the nickname. (Much like the "Twin Towers" were before.) One World Trade Center is the actual, physical address.

From what I understand the base of the tower will be re-enforced with steel and concrete,so I would hope that even if an attack on the building occurs on the ground it wouldn't be enough to even remotely bring it down. I would also hope that people have learned their lesson from 9/11 and that no plane would ever be hijacked again and used as a weapon. So,in theory, the new tower should be safe from air attack.

I still think that the design is gaudy and the over-the-top architecture looks like it would be more at home in Dubai's skyline than New York City's. I think that a memorial park would've been far more fitting.

I would have liked to have seen something similar to what we lost....OF COURSE stronger and with technology that would be easy....and yes definitely a memorial park....
