It will never look as good as Returns IMHO. Part of that is simply the difference between a $40-50m budget and a $80m budget. I think B89 looks really solid when you take everything into consideration.

Oh I bought a copy of it on Blu-Ray immediately after seeing how bad the DVD looked.

I like the grainy/fuzzy quality of Batman '89... It adds to the atmosphere.

Truth be told, I think my protector is very unforgiving. It will show even the most subtle transfer flaws.

^ You def need to upgrade to blu-ray. If not for Batman, then for Batman Returns. They are night & day from the "regular" DVD releases in terms of quality.

I have the Anthology on blu-ray, and all four of the old Batman movies turned out well, but Batman Returns looks particularly good.

Um. I did upgrade to Blu-Ray. Months ago.
I said that like five times.

I think Batman and Returns look fantastic on BluRay, Im a bigger fan of B89 but hot damn Return looks fantastic on BluRay...
on a side note that somthing that always threw me. and i understand why logically it happened but, lol at Gotham getting a complete facelift between films. same world, director, cast, but wtf happened to the city? idk i dislike things like that. Granted TDK and TDKR are filmed in different cities, i feel like Gotham was so grand I can easier believe the events happening in different parts of the city, where as B89 felt like super small, everythin looked like it happened in the same 5 blocks lol. same for Returns, city square is used over and over. But Ill end my ramble

That's because TDK and BB have the luxury of shooting in real cities. While '89 and BR were limited by being shot on sets. They have different feels and looks deliberately. Burton wanted to make it a vague follow up to the original and not a direct continuation because he's not a fan of sequels.
Thus a different production design and everything. They have themes that connect them but they're not superficially identical in the least (even Wayne Manor is different) on purpose. Nolan had a different outlook and made his movies more episodic.

I always heard that was because, at the time, Burton wasn't a fan of sequels, and wanted to something visually fresh and different with Returns. I mean, while it had plot lines that carried over from B89, thematically, BR was very much a standalone film.
Plus it didn't help that Anton Furst wasn't involved/dead at the time.

That was going to be my point. Even if they wanted to have the same look in Returns as B89, it would be impossible without Furst. Different designers will come up with different things.

It's a shame they let go of Anton Furst's Gotham, especially seeing as they kept the stages standing for so long.

Yeah, I've always been rather conflicted by that particular choice by Burton.
BR is great and all, but B89 was just such a pitch perfect vision of Batman for me, that it never had a direct sequel is probably one of my greatest film-related disappointments.

I love BR, and fully appreciate the artistic sensibilities Burton was going for... but still.

So how does it feel to live in the most inconsequential part of the world ever?
