I've got a 20gb PS3, and the memory on it is starting to fill up. I know I could just delete game saves to free up space, but I really don't want to do that. Does anybody know if I can buy an external hard drive that'll work on a PS3?

Pretty much any external HDD will work. It just has to be formatted to fat32. Here's a step by step on how to do it.
http://www.wikihow.com/Add-an-Extern...-PlayStation-3 Edit: You can also replace your 20gb HDD with a larger sized laptop HDD as well. Some saves can't be copied over to it though, because they are copy protected. If you are a PS Plus member though, you can copy all of your saves over to the cloud and add them to your new HDD when it is installed.
