does anyone know why this thing was filmed fullscreen rather than widescreen? I can't stand fullscreen. I think it's whedon's tv sensibilities coming to the surface.

full screen is something completely different. also, there are a handful of reasons for it. most of them are explained elsewhere.

1.85:1 is still "widescreen." "Full screen" is an outdated term that refers to the aspect ratio 1.33:1 (also referred to as 4:3), which was the standard ratio for television broadcast for decades. Once TV began broadcasting in HD, 1.77:1 (a.k.a. 16:9) became the standard, and it's what pretty much every HDTV is designed to show optimally.
A lot of movies are filmed in 1.85:1. I've heard that Joss went with it because it's better for the 3D effects (I don't know if that's true or not), and because it's better for vertical action (of which there is apparently quite a bit). It has nothing to do with Joss' "TV sensibilities." He filmed Serenity in 2.35:1, which is close to the usual cinematic aspect ratio of 2.39:1. 2.39:1 is most often the ratio people think of when they say "widescreen."

It is true. he narrower the screen is, the better the 3D effects look, because your eyes don't have to wander around all the time

It may have to do with it being converted. Look at GR:SOV. Horrible 3D, only works for the few seconds when they use split screens.

Avatar was shot in 1.78:1. The Avengers was shot in 1.85:1 (but shown in 1.78:1 due to 3D conversion) if my info is correct.

Another reason to dislike 3D.

It was explained by I think Seamus McGarvey that partly it was to do with having The Hulk on screen with the rest of The Avengers, they didn't want the rest of the team to look like they were midgets compared to Hulk.

The aspect ratio in no way effected my enjoyment of this movie, so it's pretty much a non-issue for me. In fact, considering what we got I'm scratching my head as to why anyone would have a complaint - it's not like there was a lack of panoramic shots in the movie or anything.

hellboy 1 is definately fullscreen, at least it is on my TV. I have spider-man 1 in widescreen now but on dvd it was fullscreen (at least the UK version was).

In the states they sold Spider-Man one in both full and wide screen. I know because I own both.

Do you have an HDTV? Because "full screen" on an HDTV is a good thing. You're not missing out on any of the picture like you were with a traditional "full screen" (4:3) movie, which were often cropped down from widescreen angles.

4:3 on my tv has the black bars down the sides (UGH!) but I quite like the bars top and bottom (to me) it makes things look more cinematic.

I'm watching the marvel avengers tv spots and they are widescreen on my tv. how are they doing that if the movie was shot in 1:85:1?
are they chopping off the top and bottom? Last edited by spider-neil; 05-07-2012 at 11:46 AM. |

That's probably my only nitpick with this otherwise great movie. But I knew coming in it was shot in the 1:85:1 aspect ratio. It didn't hurt my enjoyment of the film by any means. Plus a lot of films I like use the 1:85:1 aspect ratio. Though I'm a bigger fan of 2:35:1. But kind of figure Hulk was part of the reason (as well as the way Whedon and co. shot some of the action) why he chose 1:85:1 over 2:35:1. I just think 2:35:1 would've made it just a bit more cinematic than it already is. It's kind of strange to see all the previous Marvel Studio films with 2:35:1 but the one with a huge ensemble of superheroes end's up with 1:85:1. But it's not that big of a deal and I still enjoyed the movie none the less to even care anymore.
