What's The Last Movie You Watched? XIV

Avengers. Michael Bay, Roland Emmerich, Peter Berg... hang your heads in shame. Joss Whedon just schooled you in how to make a ridiculous summer blockbuster on his first try. Best action scenes i've ever seen. Amazing character moments. Simple yet effective plot that has layers and themes but doesn't dwell on them. Great acting by pretty much everyone.

Not only one of, if not the best comic book movie, but one of the best superhero stories, in any medium, including the comics, ever. I'm still shocked that they actually managed to make a movie that could have easily been awful this good. Oh and the 3D in my cinema was actually awesome.

No film is flawless, including the Avengers. But very, very few films are so much ****ing fun that to nit pick is to mean you are some kind of sociopath or misanthrope. Avengers is one of those films.

Was pretty much what I expected it to be with one minor complaint--

The villains weren't threatening. These creatures have technology that dwarfs that of Tony Stark, and they all come to the front lines with some advanced armor tech, yet they're neither explosion nor bullet proof. They aren't even arrow proof, and one atomic war head took out their mother-ship. At no point did I think our military couldn't handle these creatures and that we needed super heroes to beat them or all hope was lost. It doesn't help that Loki constantly gets humbled throughout the film thus lessening his menacing nature as well.

I didn't think Loki was humbled until his infamous encounter with Hulk.

The Chitauri complaint i can understand. But i think it's actually refreshing that we have a superhero film where the heroes are not overshadowed by the bad guys. It's all about the heroes this time. Loki still had some great moments though.

I disagree. Natasha out witted him. Iron Man beat him down and made him surrender. Iron Man later talked down to him arrogantly, showed him his staff had no effect on his core, and even got pay off later by Loki "considering that drink" later. Hawkeye wiped that smirk off his face when his arrow blew up on him. Thor easily kicks him around and berates him whenever they fight. Even Coulins blasted him away in a hilarious scene that had everyone laughing and then clapping. Loki, true to the wrestling term, jobbed to nearly every hero in the film. Even the Chitauri treat him like their personal whipping boy. And of course, there's The Hulk scene.

Yes, the movie is still entertaining despite Loki and the Chitauri coming off the lesser, but it still takes a lot away from your story when the threatening bad guy doesn't come off as threatening. It's hard to put any emotional investment in the out come when the villains are up staged scene after scene.

The Avengers. Quite simply a great movie. Josh Whedon's signature is all over this. Great character moments and everyone gets to shine. Thor vs Hulk was epic! Also, watching Hulk

beat Loki like a rag doll

was immensely satisfying. Just wish I could have heard what Hulk said as he was walking away, because the theater was cracking up. I also wish parents wouldn't bring their > 8 YO kids to the movies. Crying babies and 4 YOs screaming at the top of their lungs during the quiet moments kinda took me out of the movie.

This kind of stuff happens to Loki in the comics all the time,He was still an overall threat though and much more than in Thor!!

Loki surrendered on purpose, how did you miss that? He wanted to get on board the Helicarrier to get to Banner. Widow may have outwitted him, but he called her a quim. Awesome. He killed Coulson. He was a whipping boy for that alien because his boss was Thanos...

Loki had some great moments. But the very nature of him is that he's really, when it all boils down, a spoilt child. He isn't supposed to be a bad ass

I couldn't believe it, but someone actually brought an infant (the thing was probably only like 6 months old) into my midnight showing.

Amazingly, it didn't make a peep the entire movie.

Yeah I think some of the Hulk related humor and the final after credits scene are right up Whedons alley. He really was a great choice for this pic in many many ways.

Great movie. The last 30 minutes were something to behold. I know this sounds redundant by now but it really did feel like a comic book come to life.

Ruffalo, Hemsworth, RDJ, Evans and Hiddleston were fantastic.

I loved the witty one-liners and the humor.

The action was top notch and the visuals/SFX were gorgeous (ILM and Weta did a remarkable job).

With that said, no movie is perfect and The Avengers had its glaring flaws. The first act was unmemorable, the score was non-existent and the threat felt minuscule (especially after seeing Iron Man and Hulk in action).

I still favor Iron Man (9.0/10) as Marvel Studios' best film but The Avengers was quite a treat.
