The only real difference I can see here is that the argument made in the top photo was deemed unconstitutional because it violated the 14th amendment.

To SentinelMind, who I'm sure will be gone for a few weeks like usual, tell me EXACTLY why gay marriage is any different, under the 14th amendment, than interracial marriage?

Every state does have the right to decide for itself the basis of whether or not gay marriage should be legal in their state. However, I don't believe in a legally defined term for marriage because I believe all domestic commitments between a single man or woman, and a single man and man, or single woman and woman should be a domestic partnership no matter the genders involved because there is no bias in that definition.

However what happened in South Carolina is fairly disgusting because most of the reasoning for voters to ban same-sex marriage came from Christian inspiration and is a repeat of what happened in California during 2008.

See the fact is Gay marriage was already banned in NC so there was not need for this law. It actually is going to take away rights and protections for hetro couples as well as doubly banned Gay marriage.

There is just something so hateful about banning something twice. It's like they are just trying to piss Gay people off.

What makes it so infuriating is that in the counties where there's a large influx of young, college-educated people -- Durham (where I live), Mecklenburg, Orange, Wake, Buncombe, and Watauga -- voted against the amendment. Every other county, mostly comprised of rural and less-educated older folks, voted for it.

That's what happened with Prop 8. The coastal areas like San Francisco and Los Angeles may be liberal and have good sized populations, but most of the people don't live there. And most of the other counties are rather conservative, especially the agricultural heavy Central Valley.

Ah...more elitism from 'college educated liberals.' I suppose rural blue collar workers shouldn't be allowed to decide how to live their lives or govern their own state. Let's find some college educated liberals so they can be our masters.

A reliable blue state like California supported Prop 8...that says everything you need to know. It was pretty popular in some urban areas as well.

Not a surprise. It's funny because the amendment is going to hurt a lot of those people too. I can see the regret coming a mile away.

I'm just shocked that so many people still haven't gotten over the whole Gay marriage thing. Unlike other progressives, I'm not going to name call or blame religion. I just think that since most people aren't Gay and won't ever engage in a homosexual act they just look at it as this completely Alien thing and either don't care at all or dislike it to the point that they will vote against their own interests. "As long as the queers don't git married!" The Bible and other religious texts are against pre marital sex and other things and I bet you that the people who voted for this amendment have most definitely engaged in that. The hypocrisy just gets to me so much and it's only there because the vast majority of these people aren't Gay.

I'm not going to lie I believe (I'm still not sure) that I voted against it in Ohio in 2004 (and voted for Kerry) but now I will never cast a vote against another person's rights. Ever.

I feel icky that we are allowed to vote against other people's rights in a free society.

Name calling and bashing religion isn't going to do anything though and the progressive websites that do that all ways piss me off and make me wonder, why am I on your side again? Don't push people away from the cause just because you are angry. I visit those websites and that has been annoying me all day.

So should these states be allowed to ban everything that they don't like?

So they should be allowed to ban pre-marital sex?

So they should be allowed to ban so-called interracial marriage? You do not that some still want to ban that and it might be passed in some states if it went to a popular vote.

States Rights makes be shiver because if you read a history book you would know exactly what that means to black people.

Why are you still here at all? You got what you wanted, now please stay out of this thread. Don't post here anymore if you can't find anything constructive to add here.

Yes SentinelMind got what he wanted.

Gay people still can't get married in N.C and straight people are still divorcing their spouses in droves and a lot aren't getting married at all. And serial cheaters and divorcers (not a word, I know) are still allowed to marry as many times as they want. Degenerates like Donald Trump can still get married as many times are possible but marriage is saved because "Da Queers" can't get married.

That's not "college educated liberal" elitism. It's pointing out factually that the parts of the state where people are educated, the amendment failed and the majority of the state that is rural still passed it by a 20 percent margin. And I do think history will judge those who voted for this amendment as biggoted, ignorant and backwards. Because that is exactly what this amendment is.

President Obama to give interview that may cover gay marriage

Perhaps Obama will come out and announce what we already know, that his full-fledged support for gay marriage. Or...maybe he'll keep tiptoeing like we're stupid and wait until after the election.

It's a class 2 misdemeanor in North Carolina.

I know some doubt it but I think that Obama is for allowing Gays to get married I just think that he is pretending not to because he is a politician is doing polls on whether it will hurt him or not. I think that he will eventually come out in favor of it. Hopefully soon.

That makes it a bit more terrible. For a man (and a African American at that, whose entire race has experienced a long history of institutionalized discrimination) to ignore doing what is right and deprive others civil rights because he benefits from it makes it all kinds of terrible.

I would feel more comfortable if he was like Bush, just so stupid he doesn't know any better. But for Obama to know how wrong it is and still do nothing (while benefiting from doing nothing about the oppression) is sickening.

That's just politics and yes politics is horrible but I don't see how it's more horrible just because a black man plays politics.

I know your feelings on this Matt and I mostly disagree with you.
