Lately, it seems like NOTHING I BUY works right away. Captain America didn't work (it did after an hour), and now Super 8 doesn't work. Always says it's invalid. It's spotless. I have NO idea what's wrong with it.
Kick-Ass wont play any more, neither will Star Trek or a few others. What the hell... And just to clarify, I don't have internet hooked up to it. I didn't think I needed that nonsense. |

Try updating the firmware for your bluray player.

That's one downside to owning a Bluray player if you're having to update it every so often and what if you don't have internet connection, what then?

Go to the Library and download it to a Flash Drive. Every Blu Ray player I have seen, will allow you to update via the internet OR a Flash Drive.

I updated the firmware on my Samsung Blu Ray player and I got the black screen of death. Since my experience with Crapsung Blu-Ray players, I hate Blu-Ray players in general. I unplugged mine from the internet just to speed up load times.

Yeah, some of the load times on the stand-alone Blu Ray players are ridiculously long. By far, the best Blu Ray player out on the market right now is the PS3. I have noticed that the load times between different players, varies. Not sure why though.

My player's a few years old.
It's a Sony. And I tried to update it. It just won't play. So i'll probably have to buy a new one. |

Honestly, it probably wouldn't hurt to pick up a new one anyways, because the newer ones will have the new HDMI chipset, the newest version of Java, and the load times will be faster. Now is a REALLY good time to get one anyways. In fact, Best Buy is going to have a SONY Blu Ray player for $79. If it were me buying a Blu Ray player, I would go with a SONY or LG. They are the best, IMO.

I've had the Sony bdp s350 since 2009 and it still works good. I didn't even do a firmware update until a few months ago and now the discs load faster.
Only one of my blu rays , Enter the Dragon , won't load on any blu ray player I've tried. the damn thing stopped working. |

Untrue, IMO. SONYs are some of the best players around. They were one of the "founders" of Blu Ray. They were the very first company to release a Blu Ray player. So yeah, either SONY or LG is definitely the best way to go.

There is a lot of data involved in Blu-Rays and some of these cheap players have cheap and and obsolete parts to keep the price down. As others have already said, the PS3 is the best Blu-ray player because it has the great hardware to match the connectivity that Blu-Rays require.
My blu-ray player for now can play regular movies, but when it comes to huge kinetic shots, it always crashes at certain moments. The movies I have problems with are: The Complete Watchmen, Avatar the final cut, Planet Earth, Life, and Human Planet (anything over 1.5hrs). |

I've had my LG for over a year and didn't have single issue until the Star Wars set came out. A couple of those discs didn't play correctly. LG assured me they're working on an update to fix it, but we'll see.

How can you tell when a Bluray players needs updating, does a screen prompt you when the time is up? especially since mine is only a few months old so I'm assuming it doesn't need updating yet.

Newer ones update automatically. Older ones will need you to find the update feature. Blu-rays that won't play on your player is usually a good indication that an update might be available down the line, (unless you have an older player like me).

The only player that I have seen to do that is the PS3. Granted, I haven't really looked into how newer, stand alone players update, so it's entirely possible. I know that in the past, like you said, you had to go into the settings of the player and tell it to go out and look for an update, if it was capable of connecting to the internet in the first place.

I currently have an LG BD630. I've had it since November to replace my previous player (a Magnavox, which started in about June-July 2010 to take forever loading most of my blu-rays, my portable Magnavox DVD player I've had since 2004-2005 and still works perfectly...).
This week an issue I had was for both my X2: X-Men United and Hulk (2003) Blu-Rays. It took forever to load both, and when it finally loaded, it only loaded parts/fragments of the start menu (the video/scenes played normal, but the actual options-play-extras menu, etc. didn't load properly). Pressing enter/play, X2 would play with no issues. Hulk would take me to a Universal logo screen/language screen but I couldn't get it to play the film, it would just repeat between the Univeral screen and the partial menu screen... I'm trying to figure it if its the player or the discs...DVDs for the most part worked fine (so far only watched Blade & Blade II)...while the blu-rays I watched prior to these (Star Wars Episodes I-III, Resident Evil, X-Men, Spider-Man, & Daredevil) worked fine. Except for the Star Wars films and Resident Evil, I've been going through the Marvel DVDs/Blus in anticipation for The Avengers. And the apps work well (Netflix)... Contacted LG a few hours ago and they responded quickly and asked for some software info for the player, gave it to them.........haven't heard back from them since. So, playing the waiting game... ...remebering the days with my DVD players, and PS2, never had any issues with games or DVDs......and now every so many months you have some sort of issues with the current players, consoles, tvs, phones...
