Sandman's costume was the most comic accurate, but Doc Ock looked cooler. A simple trenchcoat, combined with those bad ass tentacles and his shades, and he looked amazing. A slick sophisticated super villain.

In costume, yes, Sandman wins that competition. Ock looks amazing, and there's no doubt about that, but Sandman looks much more iconic to his comic counterpart than any villain of the trilogy. Too bad Raimi butchered the character up besides the look though.

Eh. They got the symbiote itself right, but Venom? Not so much. I don't have a problem with the size, although I think Eddie should have at least been Tom Hardy as Bane size, but that's another thing. Venom himself felt just too much like a Spidey clone; sure, that's what Raimi was going for, but besides having Spidey's abilities, Venom is nothing like Spidey and shouldn't look like a twisted version of the wall crawler. The symbiote should've tried to create its own identity like in TSSM and that should have been carried over unto Eddie.

Absolutely agree. But in terms of saying which "look" was better and more inspired by the comics, my vote goes for Sandman. But what else could they really have done for his appearance? I would not have been a fan of this

Obviously everything about Doc Ock was near top-notch, although I will have to give my vote to Sandman just because he looks almost identical to the comics.

Ahh, Ok. I see now. Yeah I agree that Sandman's costume was by far the closest to the comics out of all the villains. In terms of coolness though, I give it to Ock.

Coolness yes, but even with Doc Ock as a person. I mean, if you take away the look of Sandman, Doc Ock was the only villain Raimi got right with the actual persona of the character. Marko was screwed up, Norman was screwed up, Harry was majorly screwed in the very end and obviously Eddie was a big **** up.

In order of the best villains - in terms of characterization - for me is: Doc Ock, Green Goblin, Sandman, New Goblin, and Venom. In terms of appearance, I would say Doc Ock, Sandman, Venom, Green Goblin, and New Goblin.

I thinks that Sandman did look great, but he would've impressed me more if I hadn't already seen the "sand thing," in the Mummy series.

It's not Raimi's fault the Mummy stole it.

I know. I'm just saying that since somebody else had done that effect already it wasn't as impressive to me. Still,a great effect though.

I think they were all done very well, all sympathetic characters, which was Raimi's ultimate goal. As much as Willem Dafoe was camp and over the top as the Goblin, his Norman Osborn was vulnerable and pitiable. The same goes for the others.

Eddie Brock wasn't a sympathetic character. He was a little s*** in every scene he was in. It's ironic, because out of all of the villains in the comics, Eddie is one of the more sympathetic ones.

Doctor Octopus!

Sandman was pretty cool but I wish he was executed better.

Not enough screen time for him to get that. The major problem with Spider-Man 3. Too much to handle.

Doc Ock hands down. Not only he was a great movie villain, I liked him way more than some other interpretations of the same character.

Green Goblin was my favorite out of the 3 movies. The laughed William Dafoe uses is...awesome.

Good ranking. Mine is almost the same. Swap the two Goblins around.

Sandman could have easily been in the top three if they took him seriously in Spider-Man 3.

I actually really liked the look of New Goblin. I understand why they didn't just give him the Green Goblin costume, because people wanted something different. Plus, they didn't get deep into his story from the comics. He just used some equipment and an improved formula to try and kill Spider-Man.

Without a doubt, the best villain is Doc Ock. The way he's used in the film, how he reflects Peter's story, his motives and characterisation, all perfect for the film.

The others don't fare as well, just because the scripts for 1 & 3 aren't as solid.

Green Goblin is pretty thin. He has no motivation and very little to do with Parker aside from being his first real foe. I guess it's understandable in a story so devoted to Spider-Man's origin, but if Osborn had more of an agenda and a little more time to develop his fractured mind, he would have been more memorable.

Sandman was a decent idea, but lost in execution. The sympathetic villain thing was slapped on too thickly, and retconning Ben's death over-complicated things. He might have fared better in the original plot idea, where he was used more as a gullable henchman for Vulture.
I quite liked the symbiote story. It is more about Peter's struggle with it than it is about Venom. I understand how that disappointed fans of the character, but it doesn't bother me. Brock is a pretty straight forward villain, the one true "bad egg" in the series.
Goblin junior was lost in the shuffle similar to how Marko was. What he had was pretty good. The amnesia thing was hokey but used well to re-establish Peter and Harry as friends and later bring them together again. It's a shame Harry had to die, both because it kind of diminishes the pay-off of the film's theme about forgiveness, and because the long term effects of the Goblin serum could have been an interesting thing to develop later on. A 4th film could have delved into the degeneration that followed, and Harry could have been nicely paired with Lizard as people distorted by their own experiments.

I will say though, Sandman was beautifully realised and probably the most visually interesting of all of the villains.

You know, this makes me wonder....what would be the ranking for the Batman villains, Burton/Schumacher included with Nolan. I think I want to make a thread in the Bat boards now.

Better fight scenes, better looking costume, more emotionally connected story, not nearly as many corny lines.

There were indeed many corny lines...but Dafoe was just so awesome as Norman and Goblin.
He is close to the first for me, but Ock still takes the spot.

You make some valuable points, but at least GG LOOKS like a Goblin even if it also looks like a robot. Plus, Dafoe made Norman/GG all that more amazing with just being him. Much like I don't think anyone could have pulled such an amazing Doc Ock if it was someone else and not Alfred Molina.
