Incidentally, you can pick up the complete series of that show on dvd at Wal-Mart for $20. It's not a bad deal, I must say.

I love the late 70's/early 80's cartoon with Lion Man. My favorite was Flash, The Phantom, etc in Defenders of the Earth. The movie was too trippy though.

The premise, and the art were both excellent, but overall it was ok.

Tarzan I suppose is an OK character. I've had minimal exposure to the character & just seen a few comics & cartoons pertaining to him.

Eh, I've liked Tarzan homages more than the actual character.
Painkiller Jane? Eh. What's the name of that chick that played the Terminator in that Terminator movie that sucked? She played her in the live action tv series.....That's all I pretty much know about the character.

I agree about the homages, particularly in Planetary. I like the Tarzan concept, even if its fairly racist.
The Astounding Wolf-man was good, but forgettable.

Even stripped of all assets, a white dude left alone among the natives will naturally come to rule them. And as we all know, its the white mans burden to take the savages and make them "better".

But it wasn't the natives or savages... It was apes. And he was considered one amongst them, rather than their ruler.
I'd say there's a greater argument for sexism in Tarzan's core concepts than racism... not the characterisations though. They were straight stereotypes of various races ranging from the English, Swedes, Russians, Arabs, Africans, whatever nationality they encountered. He's Lord of the Jungle, literally because he inherited the title because his parents were nobility... and he returned to Africa with his inheritance including that title, not because he rose up some kind of native society to reach the upper pinnacle.

Oh yeah, he did. Absolutely. But again, I'd say it's the characterisations that are racist moreso than the concepts.
He certainly wasn't backwards in killing black people... Didn't he lynch one because he killed Tarzan's ape-mum?

He's basically a fictional character born out of the whole colonization of Africa by Europe/Whites era, and the idea that aristocratic whites were some how genetically superior to other races.
There is that undercurrent of racism and sexism you expect of the period.

Well, I've never read the book but I really enjoyed the movie.
I think it's set in the early 90's though, so surely they pre-date the whole hipster thing? |
