Default The Amazing Spider-Man's Design Choices

Some of the filmmakers' design choices have been already been debated, but as the release of the film nears and we see more and more, it seems good to have a thread specifically about artistic choices.

I've always been a fan of the new suit design since I first saw it, but originally was in the camp that regretted the loss of the classic red belt. But now I don't miss it. I think not having the belt works with Garfield's slim build. I like the sneakers (makes sense for running, etc), the webshooters, and am extremely glad he has black weblines instead of silver. I'm a big fan of the updated, redesigned suit.

As for Lizard, I'm not in the camp clamoring for snout. I'm very happy with the humanized Lizard design, and am glad we'll be seeing some labcoat (don't know if purists were joking when they asked for pants, but I'm hoping we won't see any... coat is enough). I wasn't a fan of the first-glimpse artwork poster of the grinning Lizard, but have loved the recent images we've seen, like the hand holding the camera, the German trailer frame with the tail, and the EW photo of his face close up looking through the blinds.

The design of NYC in the trailers look great. The Oscorp building looks futuristic but, yet the exterior sets in nicely with the city.

All in all, from what I've seen so far, I'm totally on board with Webb's cinematic vision of Spider-Man.

I really love the visuals of this movie. The night scenes especially, they're beautiful.

I think everything, unsurprisingly, looks much better in the finished footage look of the trailers. The red-and-blue color schemed cinematography looks gorgeous. Also, any fan can tell the difference of using dark lighting and shadows on the costume between just blasting it with the high-key lighting mess of an EW cover.

All that said, while the blue-fingered gloves have grown on me, the rest of the design looks over-produced and arbitrarily different for the sake of being different. Bringing back the black lines (as opposed to raised webbing) looks great--though I never minded the raised webbing--however the striped legs, spider-sneakers awkward eyes and especially the lack of the belt all make the design look messy and diminished, IMO.

I bet if and when there is a sequel, they'll change the costume drastically. Only then, will fans be okay with admitting that is not that great and could have been much better.

I think in terms of design in cinematography, it really brought me back to USM and just how everything looked and felt. It all feels very upgraded.

From the trailers the suit looks best in motion.

They would be crazy to change the suit. The suit looks fantastic!

I love the use of NYC. The feel, the shots, the harbor shots. Spidey standing on the building looking out. AND NOT ONE American flag flapping behind him either.

I honestly don't see them changing the suit drastically. Nor should they.

Nope they never should.

I love it to death from the shoes to the mask, everything

If they wanted to add the belt id be fine with that.

The only thing I would change for the sequel would be the silver shoes. Make em' red, and the suit would be perfect.

The rest of the design looks awesome for me, very stylish, pretty good for the skinny body of Garfield. At least, we don't have clunky muscle suits underneath it...

agreed 100%. How was I supposed to believe his graceful movement when he looks chubby

but I'm glad that they made that, because really, we wouldn't have this if they didn't first make the Raimi movies

I never really liked the Raimi suit didn't have the right texture and the red/blue ratio made it look a little bulky. The new one's much better in my opinion, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a fanboy.

Besides the stripe down the leg, the new costume is really good. I like the very thin stripe down the arms, and I love the blue on the gloves. Wasn't sure at first, but that is a very nice change.

The look of the film itself, especially at night, looks very very nice. It looks very stylized.

The movie looks great, the only thing that looks cheap to me is that the webshooters emit a coloured light. Oh and the stripes down the leg, but those are minor complaints, to me this movie from the trailers looks definitely better than Raimis wich at that time were awesome(first two) even with the power ranger outfit... But they r soo cheesy in some ways right now and im glad they got Spidey/Parker better this time tonally. Anyways, when announced I thought they were risking more and going the route of 'he can sew it at home' sort of suit.

Things I would change:

Get rid of the stripe in the leg, change the sneakers to boots (or at least get rid of the silver stripe and blue pumps on the bottom), bring back the belt and change the eyes.

Actually, there's a lot I"d change on the suit.

Still crossing my fingers for eventually seeing the 616 suit in the Sequels. Keep everything, texture, material, webbing design, Spider symbols, even eyes. Basically, get rid of the legs stripes, add the waist line and make the gloves completely red.

I doubt they'll change the suit drastically, but before production even began the design should have changed where it's not shoes he's wearing. The suit is pretty decent the way it is but I still sometimes get bugged by the shoes or even the half belt. Everything else is okay though. And the leg stripes just makes me think Webb or someone wanted some type of continuity since Spidey has stripes down the arms.

Come on people are stretching when saying the new spidey suit is better than the raimi one.

Webb's suit is better on the material, colors, webbing, eyes and not being a muscle suit.

I agree on the muscle suit issue but on the others i disagree. I think yellow lenses look terrible on the new suit, they look jaundiced and the material looks too basketball rubbery.

I think garfield would have looked great in the raimi suit sans the under muscle.

I disagree on eyes and materials (really hate the Webb-suit's eyes and basketball grip-like material). I see your point on colors and webbing and muscle suit. I still prefer the Raimi one overall because it looks sleek while TASM looks overproduced and messy to me.

I really like the texture of the new suit. It doesn't look like a basketball to me that much. In HQ images it looks stretchable and flexible.

Some will agree, some will disagree. But that's just how I see how Webb's is better.

I'm gonna say this: the costume is perfect imo. That being said, it's not like I would've complained if they had made a costume closer to comics
