If Joss doesn't return...

It seems Joss isn't 100% certain about returning to direct the second movie. In the event that he doesn't, who do you think could successfully take the reins?

My mind jumped to Steven Soderbergh, given how he's juggled large all-star casts before (the Ocean's movies). I also liked how he staged and shot the fight scenes in Haywire, and could see him having an interesting take on superheroic action sequences. It would probably never happen though, as he tends to do his own thing, also because he might be done with filmmaking for a while.

Any other suggestions?

I don't want to consider this happening, but it's inevitable at some point, isn't it? Soderbergh sounds like a great candidate. I am also interested in what Brad Bird could bring to the table after he has had a few more live-action movies under his belt.

I know it's not Marvel's MO, but if an Avengers sequel had an epic scope, could the MCU ever attract high-profile directors with big adventure movies to their name, like Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, or Peter Jackson? I would imagine that it could be hard for them to work alongside Marvel in cooperation with other ongoing franchises and already-established visions for their characters, but it's just a thought.

It's too bad he's going back to small, innovative indie films, because my biggest hope would have been for George Lucas to take the mantle.

I think joss needs time off hasn't he been working on this film for two years forgive for the fan boy comment but why would u pass up the chance to make another 700 billion dollar movie.. Sounds silly nd likes marvel characters a lot

There's only one person I can imagine who could do it well and that's JJ Abrahms. Only he has the geek cred, the humour, the syle and the action experience to make a follow up to Joss without dissapointing people or perhaps one of his crew.

I really do want Joss back though.

He will have plenty of time off. Production for Avengers2 wouldn't start until 2013 at the earliest. He will get time off, but they have to bring him back.

I don't think anyone can replace Joss Whedon for The Avengers 2 (and 3), but if I have to name someone I'd give the task to Brad Bird. Still, it's not just Whedon's direction they will be replacing, but his skill as a script writer as well, and I don't think these skills can be given to anybody else. They'll be shooting themselves in the foot if they don't do everything within their ability to bring Whedon back for the sequel.

It seems to me that the biggest obstacle toward Whedon returning is not actually how long he gets to rest but rather how restrictive Marvel studios are about the sequel. When he said that it was a lot of work telling somebody else's story, I think he was saying that he wasn't sure it was worth the hassle just to colour in Marvel's drawing. If they're open to letting Whedon really take the reins though then I think he would be up for it.

It would be a major blow for him not to return though.

I agree I think if marvel is interest in making something for the fans they will let him do what ever he wants, feel if they don't be restricted with him then end result will be a big payout like the first Avengers movie I think right now MCU is one of most interesting things in movies going they always have something to look forward to

He said the following in an interview with the Hero Complex section of the Los Angeles Times:

“You know, I’m very torn,” Whedon said in a sit-down interview in Beverly Hills before the film’s U.S. opening. “It’s an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else’s story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it. Brad Bird is probably a good replacement. He would add more heart, I think, but he wouldn't be able to give every character as much development time.

The only way this might work is if Whedon writes the script, but if he's writing it again I'd much rather have Whedon direct as well. As much as I enjoyed First Contact, I don't think Frakes is a good idea.

Thats more or less what I am feeling. Which Irritates me. Is everything in their life scaled? Same with professional athletes. Don't be so greedy. 10 million dollars ALONE is a lot of money. Even if he makes just as much for the sequel as he did for the first, he is already more than wealthy for life. Lets not be greedy. If that is the case, common joss, do it for your fans. Secondly, don't you simply want to do it, and you can see it and say "hey, thats my movie"

I think it's fair man. I mean, directing a movie like that is literally being busy 24/7 for one year or more.

Every superhero movie director I remember have said that they don't want to even think of starting a sequel. Same for actors. I think it was this Reynolds fellow, Green Lantern, who said that a superhero movie was slavery for 1 year. Training, strict diets, etc.

Plus, a movie that makes a billion and you're doing so much effort for it... I think it's fair.

I've never got the impression Whedon particularly cares about money all that much, I think he's comfortable and happy with that. I mean, this is a guy who shot Dr Horrible out of his own pocket and put the whole thing online for free, and intends to do the same with Wastelanders.

I really do think that, being the writer he is, he just wants to keep doing new things, he couldn't even take a two week holiday between shooting Avengers and post production and shot his 'Much Ado' adaptation instead. I wouldn't be surprised if it sucks some of the creative juices if half the story is already told for you and you can make no substantial contributions on your own.

I maintain, that whether he returns will be based solely on how much control he gets over the script.
