I'm very eager to know who will do the score and to hear it the score. It's that icing on the cake that makes the movie so much better. how soon do you guys think we will know who the composer is

H-1 Racer Plane by Howard Shore, from "The Aviator" would make a great new Superman theme.*
I couldn't find the track on YouTube, but I'm on my iPod, so I'm sure it's there somewhere, or maybe on another site elsewhere. |

Call me crazy, but I don't think we need an "epic" or "sweeping" kind of score ala Shore, Williams, or Silvestri. That was almost exactly what so many people had issue with SR--the idea of it trying too hard to be what we'd already seen/heard.
FWIW, I love Daft Punk's work on Tron: Legacy. A track like this convinces me that the duo could easily craft a score relevant to a modern audience, while maintaining emotional gravitas. VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:
While we certainly don't need a Newton-Howard/Zimmer re-hash with TMOS... one thing they definitely got right with BB and TDK (and, it appears, TDKR) is a "new" sound/style, not a regurgitation of something for the sake of taking the easy road. |

Daft Punk in Tron Legacy mode would be a great fit for MOS. For two composers who mainly composed dance music before doing that film, and to turn out something that grand, complex, and harmonic like TL is a feat in itself.
And it's in the Zimmer/RC vein the studios prefer, but not obnoxiously so. |

What stage of development is the score decided at? How long before we know?

i think the score should be an epic fanfare style, similar to the williams score in spirit.something like craig safans score for the last starfighter springs to mind i can just see supes breaking through the clouds at http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...dTph5TAU#t=36s
or something like trevor rabin and harry gregson williams score from armageddon. it had moments of pure emotion and also bombastic action themes that could work well for supes http://youtu.be/_2W9tlrgRSY http://youtu.be/S7rpixN_HV0 http://youtu.be/DPWFhwRq1cA maybe throw in a bit of david newmans galaxy quest fanfare for a noble hero theme http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...TgHBnlxM#t=85s i agree that daft punk could prob make an awesome choice for superman. their tron score blew me away but thats cause it suited that movie. the score has to suit the movie perfectly. a zimmer tdk style score wouldnt work in my opinion. if the avengers and captain america taught us anything its that a traditional big score can work for superhero films with a modern audience. it doesnt need to be some electro orchestra hybrid at 1000000 bpm. i love zimmers work on tdk i think it perfectly captures batman. perhaps more than elfman did but can you imagine how avengers would have sounded without silvestris amazing theme. we need something equally amazing for superman. hell im sure silvestri could pull it off himself. i thought he kinda let himself go after back to the future except in zimeckis films but captain america proved me wrong, his fanfare for cap was exactly what supes need |

Nice try, but a little too old-school and saturday-matine like for me. It should have a more maturer and more contemporary sound without becoming generic of course.
Oddly enough some of the music from Prometheus has some fitting otherworldly themes to it.

I didn't really notice silvestris theme during avengers, went and listened on YouTube, it's ok, but nothing too memorable. he also did pretty bad work on captain America. So hopefully we can get someone who could bring more to man of steel. I don't think silvestri and Snyder would mix very well either

Sometimes it's at the start of filming, and sometimes it's announced at the last minute, but the composers usually come in a few months before the film is completed. Provided the movie is locked and in the can by November or December, we'll probably know who'll be scoring MOS this summer.

As long as it uses the John Williams cues in the right places I dont care, Superman Returns was abysmal they did not use the score well at all!

I'm sure he's been mentioned in here before, but Harry Gregson-Williams? He's done some good stuff. He most recently contributed some music to "Prometheus."

After hearing some of the snippets from James Horner's take on TASM, I wouldn't mind him to be this film's composer.

And why should they use the Williams theme exactly...?

This. If James Horner didn't use Elfman's theme in ASM, then why should Zimmer or whoever scores MOS use Williams' theme?
Williams' theme is ridiculously good, though. The composer who succeeds him has their work cut out for them. |

Williams' score is up there with Indiana Jones as far as iconic for a character. I feel bad for the composer that has to follow that up, no matter how good it is, they'll get get flack because its not Williams.
