Steve Wacker said a long time ago (back in 2011 I think) that he thinks they've done just about all they can with Peter Parker as Spider-Man, not much was thought of it but more stuff's been slowly trickling out. The first issue of ASM that came out in 2012 said on the letter page that this book is very different from how it's going to be a year from now (that was January, #700 is in December).

TASM is not "dark and gritty", it's simply not as lighthearted as Raimi's Spider-Man was, at least, it looks that way at face value. Recent reviews have said that Spidey is back and there's a lot of humour, so don't worry, friend.

Although the more contemporary and Ultimate comics-influence may put older fans and/or die hard purists of 616 Spidey off.

Meh. ASM has gotten dipped between good to boring to bad for me too often. I like it, but I'll take USM (pre-Miles) any day of the week.

Eh, when the Raimi films came out, I was loving so much what he got right, I tended to ignore the things that weren't right or I didn't like.

When I heard it was to be re-booted, I was hopeful it would be more faithful, something in line with Spectacular Spider-Man. From what I've seen, it seems even less.

Please, Dan, the Amazing Spider-Man comic is the only thing going so well with Spidey, do in large part because of you! Please don't derail it!

More faithful = in line with Spectacular Spider-Man? I don't follow. SSM took a lot of liberties with the canon.

The key is I said more faithful. Is it 100% copy of the comic? No. Did it borrow some elements and made a few changes? Yes. But, I have been reading The Amazing Spider-Man since 1973. When you look at all the adaptations of Spidey, the live action TV show from the 70's, the Sam Raimi films, and all the cartoons, from the 60's Spider-Man cartoon all the way up to and including the present Ultimate Spider-Man, the one that gets the character the best, gets the tone best, between humor & seriousness, and yes, closest to the comic continuity, for my money, is definitely The Spectacular Spider-Man!

I'd argue strongly that the 90's animated series was much closer to the canon. Were they hamstrung by rules about what kind of violence they could show? Clearly. But pound for pound, that series was the most faithful adaptation of the source material.

And I would strongly disagree. The hamstrung rules doesn't have anything to do with it. The 90's show was faithful, but it is the second most faithful. The 90's had just as many if not more deviations from the source. Of the two, for me, Spectacular's changes were the less, um. intrusive shall we say, of the two.

Anyway, isn't the discussion suppose to be about the "internet breaking" ASM #700?
