doubtful

WB became the first studio to gross 2 bil in a single year.
The produced the Harry Potter movies and the Nolan Bat movies which combined have done more than Marvel has. Wait til the Hobbit opens this Christmas.

While Marvel is off to a good start and probably worrying people at DC...I can be no one at WB is freaking out

And yet WB & DC still can't properly capitalize on the DC heroes who are not Batman. After all this time that's pretty damn pathetic.

WB is no doubt feeling the loss of the Harry Potter franchise though. And once Batman goes into hibernation for a few years what sure hit franchise will fill that void?

Hangover and Sherlock Holmes. The Journey movies did fairly well too.

Personally, I highly doubt Batman will have any hibernation period at all.

It probably won't be a long hibernation but they'll need at least 2-3 years to plan their next move for Batman.

I'm sure the Hobbit will do well enough by itself but that's not a 7-8 picture deal like Harry Potter was, and who knows if they have any plans to turn Tolkien's other books into films.

I hope "Man of Steel" does well but they're gonna need one Hell of a marketing strategy to sell it, given how much everyone loves to hate on Superman these days and the last one not living up to expectations. And a good story with good performances would be appreciated.

As for those other films on the plate... come on, does anyone really expect those to fill the void left by Batman - for however long his franchise will sit - and Harry Potter? And seriously, the Hangover? That's not even in the same ballpark.

The first Hangover made 467 million, the second made 581 million on a much lower budget than the Potter movies. Not to mention those movies did GREAT on video. The first was the most digitally rented movie of all time if I recall correctly.

I'm a HUGE Marvel fan so I think Marvel has won the cinematic side of things, but I do really like DC and as much as I love Batman I REALLY wanted Green Lantern to be a hit and was sad to see it fail like it did. I really do agree though that DC needs to market more of their characters than Batman. The one area I think DC has won is the Direct to DVD Market. Not a huge achievement, but I think its safe to say that Batman Under the Red Hood, All Star Superman and Wonder Woman have been better recived than World War Hulk and Iron Man.

But do you really believe the Hangover can be stretched into a franchise that spans a decade? I find that hard to believe.

As a DC fan and Green Lantern fan I really wanted the Green Lantern film to succeed and I too was sad it didn't work. As entertaining as some of these DTVs have been settling for "DC does well with animation" has become a hollow and unsatisfying 2nd place prize.

I knew GL would fail, & I knew I wasn't paying to see it because they used nutass Hal. Here's an interesting article w/Mark Millar that was written just after GL failed. I can't help but agree w/him. Would rather see traditional animation instead of CGI tho. Supes v the Elite was pretty good even tho the ending was meh. Need to see the storyline it was based on now.

Not really. Disney owns Marvel, and provides distribution. Marvel's still their own studio, creatively.

Thats right I always forget DC isnt its own studio, creatively. So lets compare a superhero studio with an all encompassing studio.

DCE will never be what Marvel Studios is overall. It has no leverage or influence over WB. That, however, could very well change if The Nolan Bros and Goyer pitch more ideas to the studio, and if Man of Steel and Justice League are successes at the box office. Yet, as of this moment though, DCE is a powerless department located inside the WB studio lot.

I will say this though, DCE could outlast Marvel Studios down the road when the Superhero genre dries up.

I don't see that actually happening, though. Its a bootstrapping problem: IMO, DC needs an independent studio with leverage to actually make decent movies without Nolan. They won't ever have even a chance to get that leverage, though, until they start pumping out multiple strong franchises. Given that I predict MoS will be mediocre, and JLA a disaster. . .

I, too, would like to know how you could predict this? Man of Steel has made WB insiders quite confident. The early reaction to everything has been generally positive.

And JLA has yet to even sign a cast and director. Thus far, only a writer has been hired to write the script, and he's not even finished.

It's wayyyyy too early to be predicting anything.
