All are top critics who do not like cbm's very much (read very little.) they mostly support Art House and Indie productions. It is a good start.

Its so awesome to live in the city that Spider-Man takes place in. I can look up at the buildings and imagine Spidey swinging from each one.

Just don't expect it to be completely accurate. The Raimi films were pretty loose with the layout of NY. And of course the elevated train scene was a complete fabrication. THe R train is underground. They used the Chicago "L" as a model I believe. Artistic license and all that.

Apparently the Q train takes Peter to Forrest Hills in TASM, which I know is completely incorrect. But honestly I am not going to nit pick over things like that.

Good review, but I´ll have to disagree with the crying thing.

I didn´t felt he was crying to much, especially if you compare it to Tobey.

But they were two points in the movie where he screams out of emotional pain and it felt a bit out of place to me, but not a big deal

Shock Re: The Amazing Spider-Man (First Reactions: Critics, Fans) (Spoiler Alert)

Alright, I've been ghosting on this forum since the first Raimi spiderman was in production. I am stationed in Japan and have now seen this movie twice (opened here on the 30th). I must say that being stationed overseas really paid off!
My personnel review:
1. This is the film we wanted from the beginning.
2. This one will make you consider the Raimi films nothing more than a Saturday morning cartoon series! (I did really like those films too)
3. Garfield is Parker. This film should convince all of us of how badly they mis-cast Parker in the first films.
4. Yeah his hair is pretty big, but not an issue as it pertains to the movie/story.
5. Web shooters are fantastic, the sound when fired=Perfection
6. Wise-Cracking! Yes indeed.
7. Lizard was bad ass, no snout was alright, but I felt they could have made his skull a bit more reptillian. The body was the perfect mix of human/lizard, but the skull should have been a better blend of the two. VERY small issue.
8. Thank goodness the silver tipped nike slippers didn't detract/nor were they even all that noticeable through the movie.
9. Ozborn is dying, and he is a complete mystery throughout the movie. Stay till the END credits!
10. Dennis Leary was great as Capt. Stacy. Went down fighting!
11. The web-swinging was superb. He even did the web yank move to get up the Oscorp building as fast as possible! Suit looked awesome, and I hated how it looked initially!
12. Aunt May knows he is Spider-man... She knows...
13. I have to say again, this is the STORY/FILM we should have gotten from the beginning. I, for one, will just try to forget the first films. Those will go down in history in my mind as allowing a movie as good as THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN to happen.
14. SPIDER-Sense was done right.
15. I though I would miss not having ol' J.J.J. in the film but I never even gave it a thought! It would not have added anything to the story. Maybe it will in the future, but completely unnecessary this go round.

Finally, I am completely satisfied that they rebooted this movie/franchise. I thought it was far too early initially. This movie explored the characters without making the movie about anyone else but Parker/Spiderman as it should be. Marc Webb has given us Spiderman. After seeing this, the only reason for keeping your Blu-Ray Raimi films, will be to have a good laugh... The Amazing Spider-man, is the Batman Begins of the Spider-man franchise. NO, IT ISN'T ANYTHING LIKE BATMAN BEGINS. I only provide that context to express just how much of a leap forward this film is compared to the first three. I haven't read any other reviews for this film yet, nor do I care what some highly paid professionally educated critic thinks. Haters/Fanboys/the Devoted, will all enjoy this film. I have to say thanks to Raimi/Maguire for doing what they did. This epic reboot would never have been possible without them. I have faith that Marc Webb will deliver again. He could choose the Spot as the next villian and pull it off!!! For you folks who have to wait until the 3rd to see this, get there early, sell a kidney if your broke, quit your job, pimp your mom, whatever...just plant you butt in a theater and see this!

Heavy Future: The Amazing Spider-Man Review

(T-shirt worn by me at the screening)

**Minor Spoilers Ahead**

Every movie reboot has the burden of being compared to its predecessor and it's hard not to do so especially when its previous movies are relatively fresh in the minds of the audience. For some fans Amazing Spider-Man needs to not only stack-up to the Sam Raimi films but also to the Spider-Man comics.

In terms of origin Raimi's films were more closer to the classic Spidey stories from The Amazing Spider-Man comics by Stan Lee, but lot of the other classic character elements were still missing in those movies. The Ultimate Spider-Man comic which was a reboot of the Spider-Man comics had a modern interpretation of the character. And it would seem that director Marc Webb would approach his reboot using the Ultimate Spider-Man as a template, but thankfully he and the writers didn't restrict to just one. They used both, traits from the classic and modern comics to weave their adaptation.

There is no real mystery as to what will happen to the characters in Amazing Spider-Man, but it's how those events unfold this time that keeps us hooked and entertained. The origin in the movie though deviates from the original setup, it still leads Peter to the same state of conflict and self discovery under different circumstances. Skipping the origin may seem like a better idea, but then getting the audience to be emotionally invested in those characters becomes a bigger challenge since its a reboot.

Andrew Garfield gives a great depth to the character of Peter. He is able to balance off the nerdy and quirky sides of Peter while conveying his confident and youthful spirit. He channels the character's emotional vulnerability right up to a brink while keeping it contained. It's a great performance. Emma Stone portrays Gwen as a smart and strong character while being able to resonate emotionally and thankfully wasn't made to fall in the territory of damsel in distress.

The movie's biggest reward for me was the relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. Andrew and Emma's on-screen chemistry is heart warming and it will really pay off in a major way when the movie treads into darker territory for the sequel.

Peter being a scientific genius is really portrayed well and bodes naturally to the caliber of Dr. Curt Connors. Spider-Man using his spider like moving agility and webbings from the webshooters to tackle The Lizard offers some of the visuals in the film especially during their fight at the school, it's like comic panels coming to life. Spidey's early web slinging scenes across New York City is a blend of CGI along with lot of practical stunts, which was also a real treat to watch. Spidey's lack of his classic wisecracks humour was my biggest gripe with the Raimi films, thankfully it's present in Amazing Spider-Man to a certain extent though I wanted it to be much more. And though the score to the movie feels lackluster, I really like the main theme by James Horner.

I have seen the movie two times already and it's still hard for me to say if this movie is the best Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man 2 is still a great one for me and though this movie has some strong qualities it still largely suffers from being formulaic as far as superhero movies and villains are considered. The fight in the final act feels less than desirable while the pacing of the film staggers towards the end, though those characters moments are indeed essential.

Director Marc Webb had a challenging task to bring something fresh to the Spider-Man franchise while not straying away too much from the original source material. And I feel overall he has done a good job with that. But I hope for the sequel he moves away from the city in peril situation and chooses Spider-Man's adversaries not having any connections to Peter. Also it would be great to have more day time scenes with Spider-Man in action. And more importantly hope he tries to incorporate characters and their qualities represented in the classic comics, including Peter being burdened with too many personal problems.

I stopped reading Spider-Man comics after the controversial "One More Day" storyline in the The Amazing Spider-Man comics during early 2008. Then for months together I bought several issues of the continuing storyline "Brand New Day", but beyond the first issue I was not able to bring myself to read the rest. I pretty much shunned myself from Marvel comics. But many fans have been praising the writing of Dan Slott, who has been writing the Amazing Spider-Man comics since 2008.

Watching the movie Amazing Spider-Man just reminded me how much I still love the world of Spider-Man. Especially thanks to Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield, I have renewed interest to see what adventures lies in the current comics for Peter Parker. The guy with amazing powers who is always ready to take on any challenge no matter what the cost, just because that is the right thing to do.

so, how much of a jerk is Peter/Spidey? that's one of the things that's concerning me the most based on the clips/previews?

is Peter still a good/nice kid at heart?

also, do they show how he creates the web shooters and web fluid?

I'm 40, yep military, was a fan of the comics as a child and now just a big fan of Spider-man at heart (now enjoying Spidey with my children) Crowd response over hear was wierd/unexpected. The Japanese people are very respectful and reserved. Not much laughter when I thought there would be outbursts of it. Not a lot of response to any of it. Seems they were being respectful and ensuring all of the patrons could enjoy the movie without any distraction. It was a great experience. Wish I could see a movie that way in America! I didn't use spoiler tags due to the thread being tagged as having spoilers already... Look before you leap!

I'll be online for another hour or so... Got questions, fire away.

Perhaps little cocky initially and it is understandable in the situation.

Spider edge...

He is only a jerk when he is hunting for Ben's killer and not really so much a jerk as just really frustrated...
Parker is the good guy I expected, I felt like I was reading comics again. (haven't read comics since the Secret Wars in the 80's!)
The web shooters are explained very well, not too in depth but it they were given much respect! He sort of reverse engineers some Oscorp tech, you'll see. Still gives props to his genius.

Let me be clear...

He uses some Oscorp technology (genetically engineered spider web, mass produced for/intended for industrial applications) and applies/uses that tech when he designs/builds the webshooters. So depending on how you look at it, you could say he makes the webshooters but not the web fluid... Decide for yourself when you see it of course.

This movie truly was incredible. It really, really was. I don't really know if the RT score is low due to the whole reboot factor, but aside from it having "Spider-Man" in the title, this movie is about as different as it could get.

The performances are all really strong, though I would have liked to see Irffan Khan a bit more. Andrew Garfield really is Peter Parker and I really think that his performance in the role is going to be the benchmark for all future Peter Parkers. He has this natural fluidity to him that is just ridiculously magnetic. Every scene he's in he steals the show. Emma Stone is wonderful as Gwen Stacy and she's the furthest thing from a damsel in distress in this movie which was a very welcome change. Martin Sheen and Sally Field are fantastic as Uncle Ben and Aunt May. The scene where Peter...without spoiling anything...gets in trouble is amazing. The relationships are so believable that it becomes unbelievable. But that's a good thing. Denis Leary is great as Captain Stacy and Rhys Ifans is awesome as Dr. Connors/The Lizard (specifically in the scene where is arm initially grows back. Good god man).

The CGI was spotty in places. Never on Spidey though. Spidey looked absolutely top notch at all times. Things get iffy with the Lizard, but I can't say it was at all detracting.

I'm not sure what plot holes people are talking about. There are certainly things left open to explore in the sequel, but they're hardly plot holes. There's nothing that really makes you say, "Wait a minute...that doesn't make sense". Though, I'm sure some people will be kind of bummed about some of the things that purposefully go unresolved.

The score is great. Even the questionable tracks with the kind of...dancy undertones like in the basketball scene and the subway fight, actually work very well in context.

Speaking of somewhat cheesy moments. There weren't many. The scene with the infamous "helpful" New Yorkers was great, in my opinion. It's a really emotional moment and even received some cheers at my screening. It takes place during a situation in which we've never really seen Spider-Man cinematically before. Though a different situation, it really struck home in a similar way to TASM #33.

The humor is fantastic. Many points in the movie had me laughing out loud and there are little intricacies and touches that really shine.

There are a boatload of easter eggs from iconic poses, to name references, to a nod to Requiem For A Dream (I know, it was absolutely insane to me too, but in a really awesome way).

Overall, the movie really was incredible. For me personally, it was the best Spider-Man movie ever. As for a score, I'd give it a 9/10.
Could you tell me what you mean with Requiem for a dream nod? I think I know what you mean but I may have missed it when I saw the movie.
