I could see Marvel hedging their bets quite a bit. I could see them going with a relatively unknown black actor for the Black Panther role but having a bigger white actor/actress for the main villain. Also some Avengers cameos or mentions probably wouldn't hurt either. In a way, perhaps putting SHIELD (Fury and Black Widow and/or Hawkeye) in a Black Panther film would work to give it that Avengers crossover cred, while not having them overshadow Panther. |

So with the impending announcement of GOTG as the second 2014 Marvel movie, BP will probably be pushed back to Phase III, or Marvel may even decide not to make this movie in the end. I want to see a BP movie but the chances seemed to be rather slim for it to happen anytime soon.

I'd rather them roll BP out the same way the introduced Black Widow and Hawkeye in the Avengers film. I think he'll work better for audiences this way as an ensemble character. I can easily see the sequel picking up with him in Wakanda to show a bit of his backstory and whet everyone's appetite. That's the good thing about building on a franchise: None of the main character's backstories need to be fleshed out next time, which leaves camera time for other character mini-origin stories.

^That's not how it works. When you introduce a character as a supporting character, people want to see that character again: as a supporting character. When you introduce them as a main character, they want to know more about their story, and so Captain America is getting a sequel, and Black Widow is not getting a solo movie. She's a more beloved character, but she's a beloved supporting character. That's what you're getting if you make BP a supporting character -> No BP solo movie.

BW isn't more beloved than Cap. Supporting characters can be made into leads.

Yeah, BW isn't more beloved than Cap... that was a bit silly to say, but she's definitely beloved, admire and respected. But she's not getting a movie.
So how do supporting characters get turned into leads, because simply being liked doesn't seem to be enough...

the thing is we don't know the full production schedule for all of Marvel's films. There maybe a Black Widow film or a Hawkeye film in the works but now isn't the right time.

Spin-offs. We've seen them happen with TV shows and movies (and comic books, for that matter). They're tricky, and usually don't work, but they have been attempted. Sure, the superhero movie spin-offs--XMOW (though the first three X-Men movies were pretty much Wolverine movies), Elektra, and Catwoman--have all sucked, but people are still talking about spin-offs to this day (Silver Surfer, War Machine, SHIELD, Venom, Winter Soldier, etc.). I'm not saying I'm in full favor of this. I'm just saying that it happens and will probably continue to happen.

It will continue and work at some point. It just so happens the ones that have been done straight up sucked. It's not like they were good movies and not accepted by the GA.

![]() ![]() ![]() Doc, it's pretty darn clear by this point that you don't actually read comics, do you? The words "beloved, admired and respected" have never even been used in the same sentence with Black Widow until you just did. Widow is known mainly in the comics as that ho that slept with every freakin' guy in the Marvel Universe and gave half of them syphilis. Sad but true

Beloved may not be the best word, but it better alludes to the emotional attachment people have to her than 'lust.' People like the character, yes, because she's hot, but also because she's frikkin awesome at what she does.
Now I could be wrong, I thought Black Widow was incredibly impressive in Avengers. She certainly was single handedly responsible for closing the portal. But it's possible that A) No one (outside of my friendgroup) noticed/cared cuz she was hot. B) Supporting characters are never given their full due. Quote:
Incidentally, your take supports my point. Even when you make a character like Widow awesome, give her a story arc, etc, people still only see a one-note analysis. That's true, we can hold out hope, but I'd rather not be in a position holding out hope for a solo Panther movie, especially after the demand for him has been sated in most casual fans.

![]() Agreed...I wouldn't call Natasha Romanov a "beloved" character either. Ditto for T'Challa. I think there is a risk with BP having a solo film just because he is a fairly unknown minority character. But that risk is greatly lessened if the story is handled well with the proper director and budget. BP's backstory is rich and full of potential. The setting of Wakanda itself makes for a powerful film visually. Throw in awesome tech and fighting sequences, etc., and it's ON. Cameos from any of the Big 4 (Cap, Iron Man, Hulk or Thor) would be essential. And of course the obligatory inclusion of Nick Fury.

Somehow though, I think a spin-off film with BP would be more successful. There's an audience there that has not been really tapped into yet for Marvel and I think would definitely support it. Of course, I'd die and go straight up if they made a solo Panther film: it's far overdue. But I won't be greatly disappointed or shocked if they roll him out with the next big Avengers sequel.
