Just to return to this for a moment, what you describe is also another symptom of the lack of structure and continuity in this series, with multiple writers and directors all bringing their own separate vision to the table, and a studio that doesn't really seem to have any sense of caring, nurturing and planning the franchise as a whole.

I agree some of it is down to the actress not 'owning' the character in the same way that others did, because Storm has indeed been very inconsistently portrayed and ill-defined.

For story purposes, we don't need to see Scott, Jean and Storm (or Wolverine for that matter) in the First Class franchise at all, and it would be better (purely from a narrative/creative viewpoint, with no commercial considerations) to explore uncharted territory and bring something fresh. I really don't mind if we don't see any more of Storm, I'm not obsessed with that character or actress!

However, those characters have become popular, and I hear mainstream viewers (friends, people at work) saying to me that they'd like to see some of the old faces again. It might also help the general profile of the movies and their box office.

yeah, like many have said, right now is the moment to develop the characters for first class, adding just one or two new mutants, and later on the franchise to recover these well know characters, to please the fans of the original trilogy and original five too.

Fox has plenty of time to develop an AMAZING series with this new cast, so there is no need to rush some characters so soon.

We are just on 1962 on First Class, so lets continue from that until the right time to include the "big ones"

Looking at the ASM's number at the domestic Box-Office, I hope this 2014 X-Men movie will get at least $80 million at the opening weekend then $170+ million in its final run. I'm still kinda disappointed that First Class only got $51 million in its opening weekend .

this sequel will do more than 200 domestic, for sure.

The movie had a great reception from critics and general viewers and many fans too, so the anticipation for the second is definetly bigger this time.

It can easily make around X2 numbers worldwide, and probably more.

X-Men:days of future Past will not have trouble the Amazing Spider-Man had to deal with.It being perhapes too soon for a reboot, fearing fan reactions so they cut parts out
to avoid pissing out fans with the planned major changes to origin.

Yes, the opening weekend for First Class was kinda disappointing. I hate to say this but the studio has not handled this franchise very well; in fact, it's hardly been treated as a franchise, more like one film at a time.

X1 built into X2, and there was an audience presumption that X2 was building into X3, but then X3 killed or cured a lot of characters and upset a lot of fans. Rather than moving forwards, the films then went back in time. I hope the DoFP does start to give more progression and structure to the X-Men films so they don't seem to be as haphazard.

Spider-Man is more well known and was released on a major US holiday (July 4), even though it spends ages going over familiar ground (the origin story all over again) and shows why rebooting can be a bad idea (though Sony won't care if it does well. It's the money that matters).

Plus a lot of the casual viewers weren't familiar with the line-up. They said First Class was a good film but they didn't really like the character roster for the film and I had to explain why it was like that.

Since First Class made more than $200 millions in the foreign market, Im pretty sure the sequel will get more than 250. And I think USA will support the sequel much better this time, with the great reception the movie had.

So taking into account that each sequel can get much more money than the previous one, if Fox keeps this quality route, this is how I see the future:

FC sequel (2014): $500 millions
FC seq. 2 (2017): $600 millions
FC seq. 3 (2020): $700 millions

to get more than 50 millions on USA and more than 50 in the foreign market with each sequel isnt hard, so I'd smile so much the day I see these numbers or even better

I think $400-450 m WW sounds about right. I think $500 m would be the ceiling and too optimistic at this point. Domestically I would look around $200 m. The X-Men brand on film just hasn't captured peoples imagination to the degree it has in the comics. They are really Marvels #1 team and arguably the biggest franchise in comics the last 25 years. Yet it's the Avengers that set the world on fire right out of the gate. Timing as they say is everything.

Maybe they should release the movie in 3D. 3D sucks but it might boost the box-office numbers especially at the foreign box-office.

if they release it in 3D, Im more than sure that it will surpass the 500 millions mark.

the tickets price will be a bit higher in 2014, so if you add the great reception of the movie, some actors having more recognition now, and a more than possible amazing sequel, this movie will easily become the most grossing x-men movie to date.

we'll see.

Even with 3D I don't think $500 m WW is a certainty, it just makes it more possible. First Class was well recieved but I do't think it had the impact that X1 had. As a result I don't think the First Class sequel will have the type of jump that X2 had from it's predecessor. Until we see footage it's hard to say though.

Anyone feel like speculating on box office potential? Resurrecting an old thread! (Maybe it needs to be renamed?)

My model is, and hear me out... the Fast and Furious franchise. In 2009 they made a slight comeback with the original cast and good box office ($155M domestic, $208M foreign). Those are numbers very similar to FC. Although FC didn't bring the original cast back together, it was sort of a return to form for the fans and generated some good will for the franchise. So then in 2011, Fast Five came out, built on the previous movie, and ended up with $210 domestic and $416M foreign (!).

I'm not super convinced that DOFP will suddenly send the X-Men franchise into the stratosphere because it has never broken out that far yet, but I do think it'll do very well. It also has a wonderful release date (The Dark Knight and the final Harry Potter film can attest to that). In these early stages, I would predict the following:

Opening weekend: $125M

Domestic (final): $300M
Foreign (final): $500M

Total: $800M!

I might be totally over-exaggerating, but foreign grosses have become ridiculous these days.

I think it all depends on whether they can sell this movie to the audience who've never been really interested in an X-Men movie. Like what they're trying to do with the Star Trek right now.

josh, your prediction isnt so over the top, since you made a point with the foreign market. International numbers are getting bigger and bigger each year, and since FC having a totally new cast did more than 200M, we can be sure this event movie will more than likely double that.

And about bringing this thread back, I love this type of discussions, and since this poll was made before Days of future past confirmation, I think we should have a new one, because this movie is a whole new thing now, compared to just a FC sequel back in the day.

I'll made the new one

Wouldn't it be nice if X-Men managed to cross the $1 billion mark! But I doubt it would happen!

I just hope FOX will be happy with the box-office performance of the movie so that there will be a 8th X-Men movie.

If Home Alone Part 4 aka SkyFall can cross the Billion Dollar Mark then an X-men crossover film should have no problem.

Unfortunately the world isn't fair.

That's not an easy task. Domestic should not be a problem but Bond has one of the most universal audiences world wide. Casino Royale and QOS crush the X-Men film's box office receipts WW as well. If they make an X-Men film as good as Skyfall that should help.

I didn't care all that much for Skyfall, personally.

But if DoFP can get that movie's hype, yeah that'd help quite nicely.

Skyfall is very well made. I prefer Casino Royale myself but Skyfall had a huge, near flawless amount of praise from audiences and critics. It held strong in the foreign market for quite some time to make an insane amount of 800 mil. No 3D boost either. The one I'll never understand is Transformers DOTM, and I like those films. I never had any idea that franchise would be more profitable then most mainstream comic films. Maybe the X-Men are in luck and giant robots are the key haha.

X-Men flicks are usually very front loaded and don't really hold that strong. It will need excellent word of mouth to keep going. Much more then the previous films. If the series ever wants to go that high they have to make an extremely crowd pleasing film.

The robots would definitely appeal to more people. So FOX should show the sentinels in the trailers.
