so i've set myself up with this goal of losing 10lbs by Labor Day
i've been way too lazy this year. My diet is terrible and the only person I can blame is me. I need to get over these mental roadblocks and get right. At the very least, i now have a gym buddy for tuesdays. i need to take more initiative when i'm on my own though. the only thing i'm really proud of this year is that i haven't had a soda since before christmas 2011, and i'm stronger than i was a year ago. other than that, no room to brag really

of course, I've quit smoking cigarettes (except for the occassional few when I drink sometimes), and I've also quit smoking weed and drinking for the most part; I've filled those bad habits with good habits, and like I said I feel the best I've ever felt in life; still not where my ULTIMATE fitness goal is, but getting there for sure . . . another thing that has really helped me conquer my eating and fitness goals has been cycling my workouts . . . you get yourself a goal for the next 2-3 months, and it's not so daunting; then you take a week off, enjoy yourself and your favorite foods and go after a different goal . . . make missions out of it . . . it's more manageable than thinking "well, I want to do this for ummmm . . . the rest of my life" LOL

Thanks to a herniated disc in my S1 L5 spine region and sciatica
, i haven't been able to work out in months. Been going to therapy several times a week, to no avail. Doctors are talking to me about back surgery, and quite frankly i would rather have the surgery and put this behind me rather that continuing therapy, which isn't doing squat..no pun intended. Haven't trained Jiu Jitsu or done anything for quite some time due to the pain, and i walk around with a constant limp. My question for you guys is, anyone have any suggestions on cardio exercises i can do that don't require me to use my legs?

Depending on if you mean seated or standing...a punchbag would be fantastic. Swimming, although uses legs, would take the weight off - so to speak..and one thing iv only seen in America, no idea of the name of it, a cycling machine that you use your arms with.
edit - also, you could do a circuit of upperbody exercises one after the other. This would also be great cardio. Last edited by jonnywhc; 07-15-2012 at 06:21 AM. |

Ive started a cycle: one day to focus on push-ups, one day to focus on crunches, one day to focus on squats. I do 5 minute cardio in between sets, and i do 5 sets. Im only at 30 minute workouts but im looking to improve it. Here's to hoping this will keep me on track for now.focusing on home exercise because I'm bored of the gym.
I'm not so sure if i should focus on weight loss or muscle gain. the second is harder to measure considering im a big guy and all my muscles are "hidden"

PS does anyone have a formula for calculating the recommended amount of grams needed for muscle building/bulking?? I'm going for about 1 1/1 grams per lb of lean muscle mass, and I read somewhere to take your weight by (0.4) for grams of fat . . . but nothing on carbs . . . if I went lower w/ carbs, would that hinder my muscle building? I've been taking creatine since the beginning of the month and I feel a lot stronger already . . . making some good steady gains on my bench press

In my off days, I do a set of push-ups and squats before bed. Today I added a set of bicycle kicks.
As with everything I do that involves physical activity, I want to die.

slept terribly last night, was having a terrible day at work. my coworker/gym buddy convinced me to go to the gym with her and i'm glad she did.
did some eliptical running, did some cardio/basketball, then "cooled down" in the sauna. i swear the sauna made my back pain go away, even if it was only temporary, i could've fell asleep in there but i didn't. came home to shower and take a nice 2 hour nap. felt so much better after i went to the gym

General rules of thumb are: Maintain muscle mass: .7g/lean lb of muscle mass. Increase muscle mass: 1g, 1.5g and 2g/lean lb of muscle mass. Try different combinations over a month and see what seems to work best for you. Meaning, one month try one ratio, then the next try another.
