I honestly don't understand why the NCAA is even doing anything. I know this is mostly for PR purposes but unless you want to argue that sexually assaulting boys made Penn State gain a competitive advantage, there is really no for them to act.

I don't think PSU is going to punish themselves according to public opinion. Board of trustees stepping down, firing Paterno and the rest, some would say that should be enough. However, I think a precedence should be set for a "football" organization who turns a blind eye to incidents.

Yeah, they're being made an example of.

I know the NCAA wants to hold coaches to a high standard but Paterno wasn't a mandated reporter. What he did was morally reprehensible but neither illegal nor against NCAA regulations. The university should fire him and tear down the statue to preserve their reputation. But the death penalty?
I think to state needs to make it so all state employees are mandated reporters. |

They just removed the statue of Paterno from the front.

If you want to really drive yourself crazy, you should go read some of the wall postings on PSU's official Facebook page.
The football cult that has been created their because of Paterno is absolutely INSANE! These people still don't understand that what he did was completely wrong and absolutely disgusting. I would say that cult reaction should be reason enough to just remove the entire football program all together. An example needs to be made to show other schools that there are standards and if you cross them, you will be punished. Last edited by SuperT; 07-22-2012 at 11:08 AM. |

The NCAA will announce "unprecedented" penalties against Penn State tomorrow. Some saying so severe they could be perceived as worse then a "death penalty".

The people involved in the cover up are just as bad as the one who is responsible for this mess. They should all get the same fate as him

It is being reported that the death penalty is not happening however, PSU is looking at $30-60 MILLION dollars in fines, scholarship losses that makes USC's 3 year, 30 scholarship loss look minor and a multi-year bowl ban. They may as well have just given them the death penalty. What they are doing will cost PSU any shot at recruiting and competing for at least 10 years (the kind of hit to their reputation may assure that PSU is never competitive again). Perhaps PSU should just shut down their football program all together?

The NCAA has vacated all wins from 1998-2011. Holy ****....that takes away Paterno's record as most winning coach, right?

I've been against the NCAA acting, but that was primarily my response to a "death penalty." I still think these sanctions hit the athletes harder than necessary, but thankfully they are allowing transfers or players to leave the team and maintain enrollment and their scholarships with the university.

They've also lost ten scholarships this year and twenty each year for the next four years. 100 scholarships....wow. ESPN wasn't kidding when they said that this would make the Death Penalty look light.

When you add these penalties up with a) the taint of Sandusky revolting recruits and being used as ammo by competing programs and, b) the fact that the states of Pennslyvania and New Jersey no longer producing the type of high school football players they did as little as fifteen years ago and I don't think Penn State will be competitive at least for a few generations. Even in the Big Ten.

They should make him keep the losses from those years.

I was against the death penalty only because of the impact it would have on the students and the community (lost revenue, jobs, etc). That being said, I whole heartedly agree with the sanctions that were levied.
While they'll have an immediate impact, unfortunately I don't see it transitioning to the long-term goal of a "change in culture", i.e. football and other sports programs having too much influence. I'm just glad the NCAA gave the current players the ability to transfer immediately, and to keep the grants/assistance they've been provided. |

Only thing that would have made all the vacated wins better would be if Joe Pa was still alive. That way we could see the look on his face.

It's funny because I was watching a PennSt game last year and I had to wonder if Paterno was even alive then. It was a Weekend at Bernie's moment seeing him seemingly propped up in the press box, his corpse "coaching" the game.
