This is a hard question. I liked both of them. Holmes was perfect as Bruce's childhood friend who had to give him a kick in the rump every now and then in BB. She was meant to be a little childish, I think, because she was supposed to represent the innocence that Bruce had lost, the innocence that he wants to have again, in the form of a normal life.
Maggie, on the older hand, was perfect as the mature, experienced DA. It's almost like she and Holmes played two completely different characters. Truth be told, I don't think either of them would've been as successful playing the other's role. So, that said, I wouldn't change anything. I'd keep it as it happened. Or I'd just find a different actress entirely. |

Maggie should have been used from the start. She has more acting talent in her little finger than Holmes has in her whole feeble career.

Neither.
I dislike the character that is Rachel Dawes. I dislike Holmes' lack of talent and Maggie's lack of pretty. (come at me) Woulda been cool with me if we had Leslie Thompkins as the token nagging female. But Nolan would've killed Thompkins off anyway so I'd be super pissed, perhaps it was for the best

Considering they blew Rachel Dawes away, they should've just kept Katie Holmes.

I think Katie dropped out, didn't she? If so, that's too bad. She missed out on getting killed off, seeing all that box office moolah, and then appearing in a photo frame

I think it was that Katie was pulled out by Tom and her Scientology minders... That is to say, that's what I remember hearing in my completely unmalicious recollection of things.
And instead made Mad Money or some other piece of crap film with a title like that...

I don't know why people prefered Maggie so much, I found her really unlikeable in TDK she comes across really pretty snotty and up on herself, like with the 'Bruce Wayne, Fancy That', hate that delivery. In BB Katie seemed a lot more of a likeable person for that character.

I found her more likable than Katie, who spent 90% of Begins chastising Bruce about his behavior. She couldn't even bring him a birthday gift without making a snide remark; "You enjoy your party, Bruce. Some of us have work to do".
Not to mention she's a bad actress.

I rather if Katie was in TDK because I don't like recast.

I thought Katie did fine in BB. Not a great actress, but not a real multi-faceted role either...typical Nolan handling of female characters. Rachel's role in TDK was non-existent, limited to a two-minute scene with Bruce. Was a total waste, she may as well have been a cardboard cutout. The folks saying Maggie was better make me giggle. In what way? She barely did anything. Its not her fault, just a poorly conceived part in that story.
Having said all that, I'd prefer Katie, based solely on the fact that it is distracting to see a different actress. When she is addressed as Rachel in TDK I think to myself "that's not Rachel". And when she dies, the impact is non-existent, not only because you never real care about the character in the first place, but because what little credit she'd built with me in BB disappeared when a different woman showed up in her place. Just a bad deal all around. I'm pretty sure that Tom Cruise refused to let Katie participate once Aaron Eckhart was cast. He was jealous over the steamy scenes they had together in Thank You For Smoking. Sounds silly, but I did read that somewhere and I'll bet that's exactly what happened. |

The Dawes character was unbearable. I can't see what Bruce saw in her, except for maybe some nostalgia. My main memory of the character is her standing there and rolling her eyes. When they blew her up I was relieved. I found the love triangle in TDK to be unusually cold, but maybe it was just me being unable to even like the woman involved.
Acting-wise, Maggie is a whole other league from Holmes, but again, she played the same nippy harpy.

I liked her in BB, it was just Maggie's eye rolling attitude that put me off in TDK. But as far as her in BB, Ive no criticism.

Well, at this point he deserved it. From her POV he was having fun and drinking and going out with models while she was being chased by mob, looking for her boss and constantly in fight. She found his immature ignorance of the problems and real life offputting, yet she still came and wished him happy birthday, giving him a warm smile and a personal gift. And she said that right after she got a call about her boss missing

I would rather have had another actress altogether, but between the two I'd prefer Holmes. Because let's face it, Maggie gave only a slightly better performance while looking a lot less attractive.
