Viper Isn't female lead.We know her role was beefed up.Most likely to give her more equal footing with the Silver Samurai and Shingen.Just because Fox hasn't issued official
statement doesn't mean we don't know who Is playing Viper.And mariko Is major female character.Big part of this film Is her and Wolverine's romance.It's because of her
Wolverine comes to blows with Shingen and The Silver Samurai.Although It Is also possable Shingen's father was training Wolverine In the way of the samurai and Shingen
has him killed.

Yeah Viper is like the LadyDeathstrike/EmmaFrost/X1Mystique of this movie. She's a supporting character.

But I do hope we get a confirmation news on who's playing Viper.

I think they will mix the characters of the movie opening (from Wolverine:Logan) with the Frank Miller story. The woman from that opening, Atsuko will be Mariko, and i think they will ignore the main villain of that arc, Etahn Warren and replace it for Silver Samurai or Shingen, to give a backstory and some kind of vengeance by the end.
