Well, let's be honest: Cap's great fame in comic books came from the post-1963 era, not his WWII adventures. He didn't get to be world famous among fanboys until he joined our generation(s).

So in a sense, Cap's story really begins here. The past is just prelude.

Yup, I started reading Cap in the eighties and read all his stories written in the 60/70's so I was a fan before Brubaker. There's plenty of stories to be told set in the modern era.

Do you think people will see this and accuse them of stealing from the Bourne movies? An American Soldier is brainwashed and turned into a sleeper assassin of super human capabilities? Especially with the actor who played Hawkeye in the Avengers in the new Bourne movie, their minds might go there quicker.
Do you think the movie will purposely avoid that by changing their story? Or do you think they will just retell their own story and who care?
GL comics told a perfect origin with Hal and Sinestro that was remarkably similar to Training Day. But they didn't use it for the movie. Not to say they had any connection, just do you think they could do something similar.

I for one don't want it to be different. Imagine Sam Jackson/Fury telling Evans/Captain America that Bucky wasn't dead and that he was this Russian assassin called the Winter Soldier. Just taken straight from the comic almost. That would be pretty cool to see in the movies and I hope they don't change it because of the Bourne movies.

I've never seen the Bourne movies, but I would say that not too many would give a damn if it was done well. There's gotta be enough differences to make WS unique, right?

I don't think the similarities will come up. Hell, there's a billion alien invasion stories out there in the movies and on TV, even at this very hour, and it didn't make people scream "been there, done that" when they saw Avengers.

WS is very Bourne, yes. But people won't be thinking about Bourne when they see Bucky. Plus, WS adds different plot twists, like the fact that this "Bourne" is the bad guy, and is actually *fighting* the hero, who used to be his best bud. That alone creates an extra layer of drama that was lacking from the Bourne series.

"Brainwashed assassin" dates back *long* before Bourne Identity. I don't think people will see it as a clone.

This has already become my own personal family tradition. Started it this year, with my son wearing his awesome (already outgrown) Captain America onesie.

If it is true, I am encouraged after reading that the director's will be pretty influenced by the comic story of the same name (though I'm sure they'll infuse some Ultimate stuff in there too) and that it will be darker/edgier.

Also that they're having lunch with Brubaker soon. Hopefully they take notebooks worth of notes and really capture the essence of the comic story within the movie

It won't be so bad. This is the longest wait for a while, starting with IM3 we get a new flick every few months, all the way through to Guardians and probably Ant-Man.
