There's a difference between a DJ and a turntablist. I consider myself more of the latter and yes, it's a heavy investment of practice time to build up skill and money for equipment. It's never to late to start though. If you want to go traditional and get 2 turntables and a mixer, a decent setup can be found for around $300-$600 depending on where you look (craigslist, ebay, etc). There are lots of midi controllers out there that emulate but it's just not the same thing as manipulating 2 records to make your own "music".
