Are Bolin and Mako sons of the same father or mother? Because one is an earth bender and the other is a fire bender. Maybe their parents were one of each type, but this has just occurred to me.

They had a father and mother with different bender powers, like Aang and Katara had an Airbender son, an waterbender daughter and a son with no bender powers

If both their parents were Benders I really don't see how a lone Firebender Mugger could have been able to cut them down the way Mako described which leads me to think they were both non-Benders from their respective cultures. We can guess that the father had a little Fire Nation in him since he was the guy originally sporting that cool red muffler Mako wears (since you know...Fire Nation dudes/dudettes wear Red. Like ALWAYS) and their mother was an Earth Kingdom gal. But I doubt they were Benders.

Yeah, but I wondered who trained Mako and Bolin then. Maybe some fellow pro-benders. If their parents were killed by a firebender that must have meant they were both non-benders.

Well they did grow up on the streets and did do some work for the Triple Threat Triad. Maybe they picked up a couple of tricks here and there.
