Jill Scott's Essay on Interracial Relationships

I've never been in an interracial relationship, but certainly see nothing wrong with it. I've seen many beautiful and intelligent women from differerent ethnic and cultural backgrounds, that I would have gladly dated when I was single if given the chance, but I suppose they weren't into geeky dudes like myself! I know it's a cliche' but I'll throw it out there anyway: the only race that truly matters is the HUMAN race.

Sorry, I'm just now reading this thread but I saw this one and just wanted to reply that yes we do have Halle Berry, Rihanna, and Beyonce that go against the norm, but for every Halle Berry, Rihanna, and Beyonce we have dozens upon dozens of Caucasian females that are still exalted as the standard of beauty, even moreso than the three African-American females I've stated. Heck, Beyonce was only the SECOND African-American female in history to be named as most beautiful person by People magazine, the first was Halle Berry.

I'm pretty familiar with the way Jill Scott feels. I was born and raised into a African-American family dominated by women and this type of mindset was not so much pounded into my head but it was well implied. My mom knew I would be what she considered a "good" black man, I'm in college, had a nice job, great future ahead of me so she made it clear the best option for me was to make sure I dated and married black women as sort of a give back or whatnot. I got made fun of, and still get made fun of, within my family for being a "white" black boy and having a preference for white girls.

It's not necessarily racist, I just feel like black women are consistently bombarded with imagery within pop culture that tells them they are not the pinnacle or ideal beauty within American society so it hurts to see themselves repeatedly shunned by their male counterparts for what they are programed to think is the superior female.

As far as my family, little do they know I'm gay and have been dating a white male for almost 3 years, so that's an entirely different can of worms. lol

Mexican isn't even considered a different racial group in Britain. Dating a mexican would be seen as no different as dating Spanish person.

Most white parents wouldn't freakout if they found their daughter dating a mexican guy.

I have always hated the term interracial. We are all human beings and to talk about race when it comes to this seems to me to imply that one has to be inferior. I am mixed (Black&White), but I don't live in America, so I haven't exactly experienced narrow-mindedness like this, but I have experienced similar situations. Families of interracial couples often seems to worry about what the children will be (black/white) or how they define themselves. I can honestly say that I don't define myself as either. I am a human being who happens to have a parent who's skin color is darker than the other. To define yourself based on the color of your skin is to limit yourself. I could go on writing about this subject but in closing I would say that people like Jill Scott clearly suffer from inferiority complexes because they think that white women are better or superior to them, but that is not true. My mother and father didn't fall in love with each others colors, they fell in love with something that can't be define by color or "race"

I'm black dating an Asian/Bengali, and her Dad told her she's bringing shame on her family
The other 3 members of her family are alright with it, 75% lol.
Been together almost 4 years, and I've never officially been introduced to her family, or been to their house
I have when the house was empty though lol, she made me spaghetti bolognese and salad, my 2 faves

The Whites (the less liberal ones) and Asians (the immigrant parents, almost always) can be so racist. They claim all they want that they are not racist but if you're trying to date their daughter, it's a whole different story. "Tyrone, you're such a nice guy. More power to you, man. I don't know how you do it. Honestly, it must make you feel like crap when you have to remain hidden from her parents like that. Asian parents (almost always the immigrants) can be the most intolerant parents when it comes to mixing races. This is why I am glad I am mixed. My mom can't pull that s*** because then I'd call her out on her jungle fever.

I'm of mixed race also. My father was black (It may be typical of black kids, but yeah... I've never met my father or his side of the family. I don't even know his name or if he's still alive. My grandfather thinks my mother was raped)... My mother was born in Mexico. She never discusses my father and will dodge the question if asked.

Anyway... As for this essay. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I would have to say she's just bitter. Who cares who anybody wants to date?

The only time I actually feel any sort of way about who someone else chooses to date is when I see a pretty chick with a gang-banger type of guy. I hate those people (like seriously, I hate them. They don't even have to be real gangbangers, if they even ACT like thugs it sets off this huge amount of rage I have) and don't see how anybody could like them. They're the last people on Earth who should be allowed to procreate.

This should be expected whenever you're a minority. Its a majority white country so it would be expected that whites would be at the top of mostly everything because of their numbers. Its like going to Japan and being upset that you don't see a Black woman touted as the sexiest thing in the country as much as Japanese women. I mean, what do you expect really? People are mostly attracted to people of their own race, and since they're the majority of the people in a country, it'd make sense that they'd even make up the majority of voters in a 'who is most attractive poll'.

This is how I feel too. Unfortunately, unless they know us personally, this is how most of those parents think a majority of blacks are.
