I'm relaxed. I'm actually really tired. falling asleep at the keys...
but I am starting to wonder if I am the only one who finds some of the movies in question to be more entertaining than films that win Oscars. And if I am, does that make me banal and uncultured? Or do I just respect the ideals behind the films more than the execution. I respect a studio on an endeavor to create 18+ films centered around one Universe in a span of 10 years. Its easy to make one good film with continuity. But a couple dozen? Thats the real challenge.

The movies i love the most are ones that will never be #1 on a critic's "top of the year" list, ones that almost never come up in Oscar talk, ones that film snobs probably hate and look down on.
I guess the question is, how much do you care about the Oscars? How much do you let them inform your tastes and opinions? I usually think of them as mostly a marketing tool for the smaller movies that deserve love from casual moviegoers. Because the bigger ones already get the ticket sales, the DVD purchases. |

True. I laugh when i see Batman fans get all in a rage when they're not acknowledged by the Oscars.

Yeah, I can't remember the last time I actually liked the "best picture" winner from the oscars...
LOTR maybe? ROTK won best pic, right? And hell, I thought even that movie was pretty boring, for the final 30% at least

Why?!?! Do you think cops and soldiers and janitors and cheerleaders don't know anything about frickin' Alec Guinness and frickin' Opie Juan Canopy or something...?!?! That's racist man

Well there's clearly some issue you have with DDL if you're calling him snobby for avoiding summer movies.

Guinness 'tried' Star Wars, wound up hating it. Why can't DDL have an opinion on these types of movies without starring in one? Where's the virtue in doing a genre movie that he actively dislikes? Last edited by TomPiltoff; 09-12-2012 at 10:32 PM. |

I'd rather see someone else for Dr. Strange. I'd like Joseph Fiennes.

Does Dr Strange have to be older? In Ultimate Spider-Man and The Superhero Squad Show, he seems younger to me, like...
Aidan Turner, James Sturgess or Andrew Lee Potts? I also love Richard Armitage but he had a bit role in Captain America and we need to have Mark Sheppard just SOMEWHERE because of reasons... Although I guess if he doesn't show up, I can keep pretending that Canton Delaware is Phil Coulson's father. |

In regards to DDL, I wouldn't call him snobby, but he does seem incredibly picky about the roles he chooses. When Martin Scorsese got him to do Gangs Of New York, that was his first movie in how long?

I'm praising both Guinness and Mortensen for the larger than life roles they choose to do and flourish in. And at that, I am praising Mckellen and Neeson for doing the same. I wasn't praising Guinness for being a snob was I? The "virtue" as you so eloquently put it, is in igniting a role an actor normally wouldn't do in an attempt to challenge themselves. We all know he can do realistic fiction, how about challenge himself to do something bigger?

@Zeptron
He'd actually retired from acting and become a shoe cobbler in Italy. Scorcese managed to coax him out of retirement.

I wouldn't mind terribly getting away from the subject of DDL, as I was merely making a small point by bringing him up anyway. While DDL might've been my first choice for Doctor Strange, Viggo Mortensen (seeing as how he'd probably actually be willing to do it) is a far greater choice and I'd be happy to see it happen.

All I can say is I'm psyched about Dr.Strange being in this movie. I love seeing new characters being introduced into this series of films. Thor and Dr. Strange just go together like bread and butter.

I still doubt that there is any truth to the Strange rumors

What about Jon Humm? he was excellent in Mad Men and has the look spot on down for Doctor Strange.
