Rebootings annoy me. You invest loads of money and then they kill that continuity. That's the reason I jumped off Amazing when the marraige died and why I haven't bothered picking up any of DC's 52 (except Firestorm and I've even dropped that now). I'm just having more fun dipping into the past that reading the present.

I just can't get into 616 Spidey. I want to, but I can't. I was following it closely about a year ago... then I tuned out for a while and got into USM's more recent stuff, then I tried going back to ASM but things were just too hectic and all over the place. I'm going to try catching up on the past 20 or so issues before #700 comes out though.

I loved the comic book feel of ASM. Especially the sewer scene.

Can't get into 616 in general or just recent stuff?

It's more of the recent stuff tbh. Imagine the look on my face when I found out that Spidey was getting a sidekick...

You have to feel sympathy for the writers of long established heroes like Batman, Spidey and Superman. It must be really hard to come up with interesting stories that don't feel they been done a thousand times and you are hampared because you can't make big changes to shake things up.

Yeah it was cool how they did that. He acted just like a Spider in that instance. Make a silk trap and then wait for the prey to come to you.

There's that and even the little touch of him smoothing the webs out with his hands. That was pretty spidery too.

That Felix Baumgartner jump gives me chills
One part of me wishes to do this same jump
Another is terrified by the mere thought

USM seems a lot less 'complex' than ASM. The reason I got Guantlet is because it was a fairly simple concept and relatively self contained. That's the only ASM I've read since the marriage magically went away. I have to say with regards to Slott, Spidey/Torch is one of the best Spidey stories I've ever read, I'd put that mini in my top 10 Spidey stories of all time. So the guy 'gets' Spidey but as I said ASM seems way too complex to just pick up.

So, speaking of Spidey stories, did anyone read Ends of the Earth?

I hate Rhino's motive in that story
"Oh, I'm a former supervillain who saw my wife get killed by a wannabe me. Burn thee to crisp cruel world"
And the way Spidey defeats Ock is kinda lame, fitting, but lame at the same time

Don't know if it's in hardcover, each character is in a one shot

It's a hardcover and trade. It collects Spidey, Wolverine, Daredevil, Hulk Jnr and Punisher.

For me the best eras of Spidey are;
Lee/Ditko (best ever imho)
Lee/Romita
Gerry Conway/Gil Kane
Roger stern/JRJR (when he was worth a ****)

Conway's run on Amazing is overrated imo, I prefer his later work on Web of and Spectacular

Best eras for me:
Straczynski/Romita jr & Deodato
Lee/Ditko, Romita & a few more
Stern/Various (Spectacular Spider-Man)
Stern/Romita jr (Amazing Spider-Man)
Defalco/Frenz
Mantlo/Milgrom (Spectacular)

Again, JRjr art didn't change, it was affected by great inkers back in the 80s. Most of his work in ASM was either inked by his father or the late great Jim Mooney
In the Michilinie issues his work was inked by Alex Saviuk
The issue having Spidey talking to Lefty Donovan after unmasking him fleshes out JRjr current style more

I'm a fan of JRjr current style, so I would say good things about him beside the flat head of Peter

I would have like a better fight, but I liked how he beat Ock. Granted, I expected it to end with Ock dying, but apparently that won't happen.
And I hated Rhinos' motive too.

Death of Gwen. Death or Goblin (for a time). Harry on drugs.
Overrated? C'mon...

I used to be a massive fan, his first run on Spidey is incredible but these days the guy has gone to the dogs and I pretty much avoid anything he works on. I am only picking up the AVX hardcover (which he draws most of) because it will also have coipel (imho the best artist currently doing sequentials).

I miss the days Spider-Man could take Rhino in a one on one fight
Much like in this issue

Harry on drugs in from Stan Lee, and it's excellent
The great stories from Conway in that era imo are Harry's Goblin, Man-Wolf, and Luke Cage's guest spot

I do appreciate Death of Gwen for what it did, for the legacy it left, the story itself though is not up my alley, it's good, not what I'd call a piece of excellence in ever way

So that's why his art looks massively improved in a few shots I saw of that crossover
