So is the general consensus that The Avengers could've just went home and Thor could've technically just took care of the Chitauri all by himself?

Also, could he have taken care of them by himself without destroying NYC in the process?

Not from me, certainly. We saw that the Chitauri fliers were capable of causing the Hulk pain if they could deliver a massed barrage of fire. If Thor was fighting on his own, he'd eventually get overwhelmed and worn down. Sure, he could hold them off for a long while, but the kind of moves he'd have to do to break up their forces would indeed be collateral damage heavy. And that's not reckoning with the leviathans: I suspect having one of them slam into him would be not-fun.

the barrage did affect Hulk and slow him down but not stop him entirely. I agree with the assessment that Thor could take out all or most of the Chitauri but he would have to unleash too much of his power and destroy most of New York in the process. I hope he shows even more of his overall power in Thor : TDW. I feel we did see Thor hold back alot against Iron Man, Hulk and during the final battle. So to me that demonstrated more of his maturity taking into his account his surroundings and other innocents located within.

I seriously hope that it's just a rumor for the JL film since it's pretty obvious imho that the Avengers would crush the film in terms of competition since Warner Bros is just pulling something like this out of their asses in order to make money on what they believe will sell due to the success of the Avengers, overlooking the time/work/care/effort that was put into making the Avengers into the reality that it is today.

Yeah the last attempts at Supes MOVIES were lame. If they keep with somewhat a Smallville like Supes I can see him working better. We'll have to see with Man of Steel, tho I swear WB said they weren't doing anything for at least 7 years after Man of Steel

As long as neither of them are released during each other's theatrical run, which they won't be, they aren't really competing. I don't think WB would care if Justice League made them a lot of money, but Avengers 2 made more.

I'm not sure what you mean by them pulling it out of their asses without time or care. They hired Will Beall, a comics fan, in 2011 and he wrote the first draft over a year. And the movie is 3 years out and they're searching for a director now. Joss was hired less than 2 years before the release date of Avengers and did a complete rewrite.

Not so much direct competition as slight genre & event film fatigue. Even if Star Wars, JL & Avengers are all 10/10 films with zero overlap in box office run it's difficult to get as excited about all 3 individually as I would if they weren't all coming out in the same year. My excitement for Amazing Spider-man for eg was minimal this year as I could only think Avengers & TDKR 1st. Spidey came & went, was fine & if it had been coming out another year I would have been anticipating it daily 2 years out.
