What's funny is that it wasn't that many years ago that the Giants organization was criticized for NOT caring about winning.

Did these two stars by Zito make up for that ridiculous contract the Giants gave him?

I would say no but Flags fly forever. Curious to know how Giants fans would feel.

They've two titles with him (despite him?) so it can't feel that bad.

They don't win this year without him though. He was garbage against the Reds, but The Cardinals had made it through the difficult starters and had him at home in an elimination game. They were salivating and yet Barry Zito totally mind-****ed the Cardinal lineup. And he set the tempo in Game 1.

I don't know if it makes up for that idiotic contract, but I'm not sure how to put monetary value on clutch postseason performances. It's an interesting question.

I'd just take the banner and be happy. Yea, he may not have lived up to his deal, but he pretty much won them a World Series.

I don't give him any credit at all for 2010 wasn't on the postseason roster. So its basically two starts and regular seasons ranging from terrible to mediocre at best

Fair points, especially 2010. Everybody except San Fran's front office knew that was a terrible contract.

But, again, 2012. The Cardinals, in St Louis, elimination game, lowly Barry Zito takes the mound. I'm expecting a home run derby, but he pitches a gem despite having an 86mph fastball. He sends it back to the Bay and helps sink the red birds. Then he does his job in Game 1 against the Tigers with even worse stuff.

Back to the contract. I mean, is it even fair to hate Zito for it? It's not like there's anything he can do about his decline. The man's fastball is nonexistent and his curve ball only bites now and then. It'd be different if he had been on roids or has emotional issues were you could pinpoint self inflicted sucking. As it is he's just physically limited, his decline was obvious in Oakland and San Fran was dumb enough to ante up.

Not hating on Zito at all just talking about the contract itself. Speaking of bad contracts Alfonso Soriano decides to reject trade to Giants because he wants to go someplace he can win. HA!

giants, baby!

also, abiout zito: his 2010 regular season was actually better than this year's. he just got hot at the right time.

also, zito can be an effective pitcher again if he continues what he's been doing. his cutter, which he developed this year and has thrown much more than any other pitch, has been a game changer for him. if he can command his pitches, he can still turn in a ton of quality starts.

as for if his contract has been worth it: hell yes it has been. i would not change a damn thing...championships are the only thing that matter. getting 2 in the past 3 years...i don't change a thing.

I think it is helpful to point out that we do live in an age where the Dodgers are willing to take on Josh Beckett in addition to two huge contracts, basically screwing their organization for the foreseeable future, on the hopes that they might win the wild card and he'd turn into Super Postseason Beckett.

This is the age where pitchers can have and get paid for substantial postseason value while maintaining minimial regular season value. Barry Zito has historically been good to great in postseason starts. And 2012 was the first year he got that chance with SF.

Sorry, I wasn't implying that you hate him. I meant SF fans possible perceptions of him as a guy not earning his pay.

Haha, I forgot about Soriano. That's a trip.

Happy that one of my teams won this again this year (big Giants fan who also happens to have a bit of soft spot for the Cards after their 2006 win.)

As a Giants fan, I don't care about the contract.

Although I'm not one to really worry about the contracts my favorite teams dish out... it's not my money. And in MLB, there's no salary cap to worry about anyways, so I really don't care if Zito is worth his contract or not. He was a key part of our post season run this year, so I'm glad to have him on the team.

I mean, he's definitely overpaid. That much is obvious. But the history books are gonna look back at 2 championships in 3 years, not how much their pitcher was getting paid.

I use another team in another sport as an example - I am an Orlando Magic fan, and Otis Smith gets bashed all the time for the contract he gave to Rashard Lewis. Was Rashard Lewis worth max money? Well I mean, he's no LeBron James or Kobe Bryant... but we're not in the 2009 NBA Finals without him. I find it hard to say a guy is overpaid when he was a key component of the best squad in team history. One could argue that his poor contract kept us from being able to content for an extended period of time, but the counter to that is that without him on his inflated contract, we may not have been a contender at all.

When it comes to Zito, he was clutch for us in the rotation this post season, so whatever, let him get his dollars. As a fan, I got a new championship shirt coming in the mail.

Belated congrats to the Giants. Tigers offense looked awful the entire series. Cabrera standing there looking at strike 3 was the perfect microcosm for this series. Not sure how the Tigs beat the A's, steamroll the Yankees, but then completely forget how to hit, but that's baseball for you.

I do like guys like Posey and Panda so it was good to see them win, and it's nice to see Zito redeem himself.

The Giants are a fun team to watch. No real huge megastars. Mostly, a collection of dudes.

yeah, well no megastars because they don't play on the east coast.

if they did, posey would be hailed as basically the new derek jeter, sandoval would be hailed as the next big thing, and all the pitchers would be considered superstars.

Yes and yes. Seriously the Mets need to stop f**king around. If they can't afford to run the team then sell that s**t already. It really bothers me that they suck and I'm a Yankee fan talking here. It's more fun when they are good. It's good for the city, good for the rivalry, it's just good all around. When they had that good team 99-00 it made for fun sports in Sep/Oct in NY. I'd love to see another Subway World Series someday. Of course if the Yanks lose I'll curse their name....

Didn't seem to hurt Barry Bonds (before the steroids, at least)

Its been reported that Josh Hamilton's asking price is 7 years $175 million. If the Dodgers didn't already have a full outfield I think they would be stupid enough to pay this.

And much to the surprise of about zero people, the Red Sox re-sign Big Papi to a two year deal.
