Re: Matthew Vaughn Is NOT Helming X-Men: First Class Sequel - Part 1
Well, it all starts with a good script so let's hope we have one of those.
Singer did a very good job on the X-Men, especially for the time they were made and the budget they were made with. They still hold up, but only just!
They're still good films, but comic book films have become more daring since then.
With First Class, Vaughn was a bit more daring/exciting than Singer was on X1 and X2, but in other areas he could have done with Singer's care and thought (Beast's look, the characterisation of Emma, Banshee, Havok). But at least the script was still good on First Class (whereas Ratner was equally exciting as Vaughn with the action/visuals but more careless with the storytelling).
The combo of Vaughn and Singer for DoFP should work out okay, if Vaughn is indeed an actual producer on set rather than some 'in name only' thing to honour a studio contract tying him to the second film.
Simon Kinberg is still an unproven factor on the X-Men films. All people think of when they hear his name is X-Men: The Last Stand - as well as rewrite work on Catwoman, Elektra and Fantastic Four. None of those are well regarded by fans, some of them are hated by the mainstream as well. He may have done uncredited rewrites on X-Men: First Class but the fans and public do not know what he was responsible for so they can't give him any praise as being the one to have written this line, or that line, or scripted this scene, or that scene, or come up with this idea, or that idea. So he has yet to prove himself to fans of the franchise, harsh as that may sound. We don't even know if he has read the comics or seen the animated iterations.
I'd rather it was Singer or Vaughn directing the film, as some guarantee of a required standard, and I hope it has some of Vaughn's edgy energy as well as Singer's care and attention to detail.
