... Except Tron Legacy wasn't even that good. Oblivion will be his true test. Hell, Tron should have been but he just didn't do a good job with it. Wasn't that his first movie ever?

I liked the world-building in Tron Legacy and i liked Olivia Wilde. Too bad they didn't do much with the story.

I enjoyed it much more upon my second viewing. Might watch the otiginal Tron tonight, or John Carter.
BTW I have only limited knowledge of the EU, what would be the best place to start? I like Kyle Katarn a lot and hope to see him on screen in Episode VII any books that focus on him?

Not a fan of Ron Howard either, I find most of his movies pretty bland.

Yeah, he's pretty cookie-cutter. That was kind of the joke I was going for, was surprised to see a lot of people actually like the suggestion...but to each their own I suppose!

The thing is we'll probably see directors of all shapes and sizes eventually tackle the series. I've accepted we'll get some bad apples. But for Episode VII, it'll be the first SW movie in ten years, so lets get someone good.

How does a typical fantasy director make the film?
And what if the director has a background in sci fi? |

Fantasy and sci-fi go hand in hand so it doesn't matter. Especially Star Wars is a mix of both despite some people's insistence it's strictly fantasy which is weird. If all else it's sci-fi first then fantasy.

Ron Howard has been radically inconsistent as a director for the past decade. For every 'Frost/Nixon' we get 'The Dilemma'. But I will always thank him for Arrestee Development.

I like Shawn, but I can't give him a past due to one decent movie he's done considering his past work.
He's too much a liability for a film like this. If people thought Jon Favs is too safe of a choice then what's Shawn Levy? |

You don't want safe but at the same time you don't want someone that's gonna **** it up by being all avant garde either.

well an unsafe choice was that safety not guaranteed director yet all you fans crapped on it
alot of fanboys prefer safe choices aka guys who have worked in the genre same reason fans are also very safe even with cast suggestions a reason people suggested Crispin Glover for joker and not ledger |

Also some fans lack the 'think outside the box' mentality that gives them a wider perspective on things, hense why I think a fanboys would make for the worst casting directors. Then Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbach, Idis Elba, Jon Hamm, Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender would have a field day! I don't blame fans since these group of actors are amazing.
There are safe choices and there are riskier choices but with me, it's about having that gut feeling that tells me that it's gonna work. An initiation. |

If they wanted to micro-manage it they wouldn't bring back Kasdan. I think the films are relatively safe.

Good lord, if it's Howard I'll become a ladyboy and allow myself to get murdered in Bangkok.

I'd be ecstatic if Kosinski did it. The script needed improvement, but his direction and camera work was amazing. And he can sure as hell make an action scene of any kind exciting. He'd deliver out-of-this-world lightsaber duels.
